Vectra VL6/233 BIOS Update Follow-on.

Ron Kinner's reply to my earlier query was on target, but I omitted to note that I'd already skinned lots of knuckles removing drives to set jumpers. Master/Slave conflicts are not the problem.

However, Maxtor's installation instructions Step 2, states "System BIOS dated prior to September 1997 do not support drives greater than 8.4 GB." So, to rephrase my original question, does the current BIOS upgrade I've downloaded raise that limit?

Thanks to Ron for the quick response and apologies for the omitted detail in my original question. As Ron noted, flasing a BIOS is not something to be undertaken lightly, so I'd like to be sure it's useful in this case.

John:

The following link describes what you need to know (but maybe don't want to hear):

http://www.support.vectra.hp.com/vectrasupport/level4/25vfa263en/25vfa263en.html

The biggest hard drive you PC (assuming it's a series 6 vl6) will support is 7.9 GB.

As much as I'm not of fan of the software products that solve these kinds of problems, you may want to try the Maxtor free download of their product:

Good luck!

Thanks, Roger; you're right, that's the info I needed, but not necessarily what I wanted to hear.

It sounds like the BIOS upgrade will get me up to 7.9GB, so I might be able to use that for a while until I can trade in this old PC for a newer one. Probably could use MaxBlast or Partition Magic to override the BIOS, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort on a P-II/233!
