XP new installation very very very slow...I mean...a lot slower

Hi, I bought my laptop from HP (model:Pavilion ZE5200) and I had to install again windows XP from HP recovery CDs and I got the same problem as you are reporting.
Laptop was fast like hell before and after the new instalation is so laggy and slow (a lot!!!!!!)that does not look the same laptop as before. I have 524 MB RAM. I hope that someone from HP could help me to track and solve the problem. If some drives are missing is HP responsability to have them all in the CDs that came with laptop.
Please help!!!!

Could be when you restored you got XP without the RPC patch and immediately picked up a worm. Do Ctrl + Alt + Del and select Task Manager then Processes. Click on the CPU column heading and see what is at the top. If it's not System Idle Process you proably have the worm or at least the process which is wasting all of the CPU time.

Re: XP new installation very very very slow...I mean...a lot slower

Hi Gil,

As Ron says, it is recommended to virus-check prior to suspecting XP proper. Also, your system has more than enough RAM to run XP without problems, so it is worth exploring other tracks such as:

1-One of the various patches added after XP installation.

2-The Recovery CDs, as they may contain HP-native, system-programs, which could possibly gnaw at the resources of the CPU and/or the RAM. Note that many threads of this forum report that reverting to a full-retail version of XP would solve "patently desperate cases".

3-Too many programs lauched at the same time (see your MSCONFIG starting files).

4-Any BIOS update required for running XP.

5-A congestionned disk and/or registry.

ANYWAY, ADDITIONAL TO RON'S ADVICE, YOU SHOULD APPROACH HP AND QUESTION THE CONTENT OF THEIR RESTORE CDs. PERSONALLY, I HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH COMPAQ RESTORE CDs UNDER WIN 98, ALSO WIN 98SE. THEREFORE I HAVE SIMPLY STOPPED USING THE MANUFACTUROR'S CDs.

Re: XP new installation very very very slow...I mean...a lot slower

Thanks guys...I'll go and check all your comments...probably will take time...regarding avoiding the restoring CDs from HP...How can we know and get all the drives necessary for CdROM, monitor...etc, etc...I belive we must use the restoring CDs. If none of your suggestions works I'll do Fdisk and start everything from scratch...if that does not works...I'll bye a gun and shoot or either myself or the guys in HP...lol..just kiding!!!!
Thanks again
