Any experiences running Micrsoft Hyper-V and SharePoint?
One of our internal HP BladeSystem forums was discussing how well MS runs with Hyper-V and SharePoint. Here is what started the discussion: "I’ve been told that MS does not do a great job in supporting and recommending running SharePoint in a virtual environment, especially Hyper-V while VMware does support and recommend running SharePoint on VMware ESX. I cannot find any document from the VMware web site that backs up the statement above so cannot assert if it’s true or not. However, while googling the Internet, I find this white paper from MS about SharePoint and virtualization. May be it’s old news for you but I would like to share it with the community. Some highlights from the paper: • SharePoint is supported but not all the roles are recommended for virtualization due to special requirements for CPU, memory… especially the Index server where there may be no gain to go virtual • MS does not rule any role out as candidate to be virtualized but rather states that precautions need to be taken before virtualizing it." In response our forum members provided these reference papers to help on this topic: • Paper on Best Practices provided by VMware on Virtualizing SharePoint ( Yeah it exists!) http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1397 • The ESS Alliance COE team has produced several papers on MOSS 2007 running on Hyper-V and Blade Servers: http://ww.hp.com/solutions/activeanswers/sharepoint http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA2-1877ENW.pdf http://h71019.www7.hp.com/ActiveAnswers/cache/70677-0-0-0-121.html • EMC V-Max and Microsoft workloads ( SQL-Exchange-SharePoint) http://powerwindows.wordpress.com/2009/04/14/v-max-and-mixed-microsoft-workloads/ • EDS - Portals and Collaboration Community https://knowledgecentre.eds.com/sites/kc69/s5/t1/default.aspx Do you have experiences that you would like to share about virtualizing SharePoint?
