A bit more information if you please:
what blades are installed now? BIOS & ILO version?
what interconnect devices? Virtual connect? what version firmware on those?
If you have VC and it's really old, you have to be very careful how you do this upgrade. Do not just upgrade the onboard admin without consulting HP first (and I would suggest you open the support call from ITRC to avoid the first level disasters...)

we are currently at v3.60 of the OA on our c7000 chassis can I upgrade directly to 4.01 or do I need to do 3.71 first then 4.01.

You can go directly to version 4.01.
