upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Hi everyone,

Somebody can help me to find a document or manual that explain how to upgrade the firmware of this fc switch for blades and which is latest firmware available for the switch, I think is the 6.2.2f but not sure.

thank you in advance

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Hello!

Yes 6.2.2f is the latest one.

You can only upgrade to 6.2.2f if you are on 6.1.0a or later.

To get to 6.1.x you need to be on 6.0.0b at least.

So if you haven't updated in a while you may have to upgrade in steps.

Basically you need to:

  1. download the firmware(s).
  2. extract it on an ftp or scp server
  3. go to the CLI of the switch and type: firmwaredownload
  4. enter user/password, ftp or scp server, and path to the firmware
  5. it then downloads the firmware, updates the switch and reboots the switch

You could also do the upgrade via the web interface (still need to point it to an ftp or scp server) or with  DCFM/Brocade Network Advisor.

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

I have a question on this Switch and version of the OS. When I unpacked 6.2.2f and looked for a release.plist file, I found a number of directories along the lines of SWBDnn. I assume that each one is for a type of switch.

I have tried but cannot relate one of these directories to the above switch (in the title).

Can someone please help?

Thanks. Vince.

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Hi, if you type 'switchshow' in the CLI of your switch you should be able to find a two-digit number. It's probably called model or type or something like that. Is this number available in one of the SWBDnn directories?

Perhaps it would have been better if you would have opened a new topic here instead of posting in this old one.

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Thanks for the reply, it seemed to fit in with the rest of this post and would provide clueless people like me with the next bit of the puzzle.

Here is the output

hpbl2sw1:admin> switchshow
switchName:     hpbl2sw1
switchType:     43.3
switchState:    Online
switchMode:     Native
switchRole:     Subordinate
switchDomain:   26
switchId:       fffc1a
switchWwn:      10:00:00:05:1e:56:2c:90
zoning:         ON (GPFS2_CONFIG_12)
switchBeacon:   OFF

So I am assuming that the answer is 43 in this instance?

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Why you want to know this?

You must not specify this model number in the path to the firmware during update.

Example:

switch:admin> firmwareDownload
Server Name or IP Address: 10.1.2.3
User Name: userfoo
File Name: /userfoo/firmware/v6.3.0
Network Protocol(1-auto-select, 2-FTP, 3-SCP) [1]: 2
Password: <hidden>
Checking system settings for firmwareDownload...
Trying address-->AF_INET IP: 10.1.2.3, flags : 2
System settings check passed.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

I was looking at the manual - webtools admin guide - and it specified that need needed to enter the path to the release.plist file. There is not one in the v6.2.2f directory, but there is one in each of the lower directories.

Thanks for your reply. Vince.

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Hi there

I have troble to find som old firmware files for the Brocade 4/12 (or 4/24) SAN Switch. I have a switch in my workshop that has firmware 5.0.5  :-(

I found 5.1.0 but I also need 5.3.x  6.0.b  6.1.x   6.2.x  to finally get to the newest 6.2.2f

Does someone have links for the missing files? (BTW some links in this thread are not working anymore)

Chris

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

This helps very much. That was exactly the website I was looking for. Unfortunately the link on the HP firmware website was dead......

Thanks for the new link

Re: upgrade firmware Brocade 4/12 SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem

Greetings,

i think that you would easily the new SPP, which will easily help you in the update process without the need to use any CLi

in addtion you can refer to the documentation from which you get detailed information regarding your versions.

now you can refer to SPOCK at the compatability matrix part, and get the detailed information about all the firwares that are compatible with each other

Brocade firmware is not a part of SPP.

Hope this helps!
