Cable unplugged error in Windows XP
Hi Guys,
I am running Win XP in a P4 machine with onboard LAN.
I have connected this machine to an other machine running XP with a cross over cable.
On one fo the machines I get a cable unplugged error eventhough I am using excactly saem configurations for both machines.
Can anyone using XP home network successfully comment on how to fix this problem.

Thanks

Re: Cable unplugged error in Windows XP
Possibly a bad cable? Reverse it and see what happens.
Also verify that there is only one NIC on the XP. If there is a built-in one you might have installed a LAN card without realizing it and could be now plugged into the wrong one or you might be using a docking station which has its own LAN card. Go into your TCP/IP properties under Networking and choose the Adapter tab. See if there is a second adapter shown when you click on the down arrow.
Third possibility is a bad NIC.
Fourth is that you need a BIOS upgrade or the port is disabled in Setup.

Re: Cable unplugged error in Windows XP
Sandra,
I am having a similar problem. It is very sporadic. I use the machine all day at work and some days it won't ever give me the disconnect and other days it will disconnect a dozen times.
I went into the device advanced configuration and played with the Link Speed/Duplex Mode. The most compatible selection is 10 Half. I have had trouble on many machines if this is set to AutoSense. So I always force it to a value. That seeemed to stabalize it a little, but I still get disconnects.

Re: Cable unplugged error in Windows XP
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies.
I have just figured out that the PCI slot in which I had the NIC was playing up !
Once I relocated the NIC to an other PCI slot everything is working like a breeze. It did not take me more than two minutes to run the setup wizard in XP and get everyting to work.
Thanks
Sadha
