cannot find an default gateway number in LAN settings
hello!!
i have compaq presario 2500 notebook on windows xp.
when i try to establish LAN connection with automatically detected settings the info path shows only IP adress and subnet mask. cannot find a default gateway and DNS serwer number. this is what i did:
- in run window i've typed cmd and selected ipconfig /all.
- my computer shows only ip and mask number so I've changed opptions to manually configuration and typed settings from another computer which had established a connection. I've typed the ip, mask, gateway, DNS and even MAC adress and my computer is still not able to connect.
in the cmd i've typed: ping ip adress, the computers shows info about lost [0] sent [4] and received datas [4]
when i ping a mask adress it also works good, problems ocurs when i type gateway and DNS server adress it hangs up and displays error. generaly it looks like the comp. is attempting to establish a connection and suddenly it falls out to establish. what should i do?
the reaction is the same if i enable or disable firewall.

Re: cannot find an default gateway number in LAN settings
First of all, don't use the same MAC address as the other computer that you used for reference. The MAC address is unique to every network device. Your computer should have its own, different MAC address.
Also, your IP address must be a unique number, it cannot be copied from the other machine.
What kind of network are you trying to connect to that has no DNS server? If there is no DNS server than your only option is to setup the network settings manually.
Leave the firewall off until you have established your network connection properly.
You should really contact your Network Administrator, they can provide the proper network settings.

Only in computer support will someone come to you with a problem and then refuse to answer your questions in any polite way.

Re: cannot find an default gateway number in LAN settings
that's right. i guess it's an issue with network register in Windows. to obtain ip, mask, DNS and gateway automatically i'had to clean registry keys using a cleaning program. maybe there was some spy attached to the registry or the registries were doubled.
