Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

I need to do this for my internet to work, but the documentation with this unit states that I cannot change the MAC address.

Would a firware upgrade fix this? Or is there another solution?

Thanks

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

I do not think that you can change this address. As far as I know, it's only possible on evoluted switches.
Are you sure you have to change Mac address ? It's an unique number burned in your CP-2W ROM, adn I do not see why you should change it.
You may have to change your IP address, the address used to identify your machine on the Internet, and if you describe your installation we'll tel you how to do it, but MAC address... what would be the purpose of changing it ?

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

First off, thanks for the reply Jerome. Sorry for the long delay but a new baby has arrived and things are pretty hectic here.

Anyway....the reason I thought about the MAC address thing is that on my D-Link wired router, part of the setup is to clone the MAC address of the NIC on my system, so I thought it should be similar. But according to some friends, all I had to do was to reset my cable modem to factory settings and then it should see the routers MAC address as the one to use.

I gave this a go and it seemed to work well, even got an IP addy to show up on the router config screen, but no internet was accessible. I tried renewing the IP through the CP-2W config screen but it released and never renewed. Since then I have not been able to get ANY IP address from it.

Any ideas?

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

Made a phone call to my ISP and they told me to reset the modem to factory settings, same as friends had said. I kept doing it until somehow it worked. If I have to do this again, I don't know what to do to make it work, it was touch and go.

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

Congratulations Hugh ! What a good news ! I'm awaiting my second baby for october...

I got what happen. Cloning, I guess, means NATing, so that your router has in it's table your IP and MAC, and ca thus represent your computer in front of the outerworld.

As far as the IP is concerned, your ISP is providing it, renewing it so and so finally came your router table to be not valid anymore, and re-ask outside for a valid IP, which your IPS DHCP provided and all went OK.

To make it short, you did what had to be done !

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

I've come to the conclusion that the CP-2W is a piece of crap. I'm having to reset it at least once a day, and my girlfriend can't work from home unless I'm there to reset the connection.

Gone back to the wired router for now.

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

What firmware are you using? What kind of cable modem do you have?

I have a CP-2W and it is working fine except for the admin page freezing. As long as I don't go into the the cp.home screens it works just fine.

I did have problems with it before, but it was a line problem at an older house. They were trying to fix it until I moved. Now in the new place it works just fine again.

Point of note - I've got Time Warner and they are using Toshiba cable modems it looks like. The one they provided at the new house did not work with the CP-2w and gave me problems like your describing in your posts. I went to the other cable modem from the old house and everything works well. I've seen several people post problems with the combination of the CP-2W and Toshiba 2500 cable modem. The 2200 seems to work just fine on my end.

I have wireless usage throughout my home on both floors with the cp-2w up stairs in my "office".

Re: Cloning MAC address with CP-2W

I never changed the firmware. I have since traded my CP-2W. I am using a Terayon cable modem FYI.
