DWL-650+ has poor performance w/ hp ze4125

Got a D-Link DI-614+ wireless/wire router and D-Link DWL-650+ wireless card. Hooked em up and my Me system that is hardwired works fine but my HP ZE4125 laptop and wireless card dont work well. I can only get about 35 feet away from the router before connection drops. I called DLink and tried 6 different people and many of the same steps....same results....MUCH TROUBLESHOOTING!!! Finally got out my Dell Inspiron 8200, installed the wireless card and BAM....I can walk 300 feet up the street without more than 30% signal loss. ??? Any ideas why my HP wont work very well. I tried driver updates on wireless card, firmware upgrade on router with no luck. Any help would be great.

I also have a 614+ that came bundled with the 650+ . My ze4145 has much the same problem here. i finally started using my Netgear PC card. A little bit better range with it, but not great. My desktop is also wireless using a belkin usb card and has good range. I have been told it is a weakness of the pavilion laptop, that the case of it somehow shields it from getting a good signal.
