Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

It works pretty good for a year already.

However, starting from last week, the wireless card suddenly disappeared after rebooting. Sometimes it may appear again (just around 10% of chance) after reboot. I am really tired of it !!

Tried everything to update. But the problem us not solved. My notebook is out of warranty (after one year). What should I do?

Okay well my HP TX1000 WLAN disappeared a week after I reformatted. I have an extended warranty with it however I heard horror stories with tech support. Has anyone who recently called tech support or heard anything about a resolution for the WLAN problem? I mean I want to call ASAP but I want to have some info on what to tell them, like if I should request a new WLAN card (other than broadcom or whatever its called), motherboard, etc?ion? I

Same problem man. And I've been reading up on the DV6000 and 9000 series forum about the same problem. DOesn't look good. I got my computer a year ago and my warranty is almost up. I'm going to chat with tech support and try to get a box sent to me so I can send it in.

Very frustrating. I've tried pretty much everything.

Reinstallation of the drivers and bios flashing to latest firmware. Hope HP support will be better with me than they have with others.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

Yes!

So...Man I love the tech guy I just got. The nicest out of the last three.
Guy from Canada ;) Knew I could count on a Canadian to be friendly.

So after doing all the various stuff the other tech's told me to do.
I called in today, and the Canadian Tech, John, is sending me a box to send my computer in.

He first suggested sending me a new Wireless Card. However I reminded him that my Warranty is out in a week, and that I would really like to just get the MoBo replaced, and he agreed that that would probably would be the best path for me. The guy was actually quite understanding and just left me with a good experience. Though the first two Tech's did have me do all the other troubleshooting beforehand, that stuff is kind of procedure and not easy to immediately get around of.

John also made sure that this will be put all under my warranty so I don't pay a penny! Props to John, who lives in Nova Scotia!! Cheers! I'd buy you a beer if you didn't live so far away!

So tips my fellow HP customers,
Just be persistent and nice. Being nice is very very important. Nice but assertive. Keeping the mood light. If the Tech starts small talk during wait times, join in!

After I get my computer fixed I'm probably going to sell my computer to EBAY, first thing. Then buy a new computer. I can't deal with HP, at least not this series of computers. I will probably go to Apple, but let's see how good of a job they do on the repair.

I'll give a follow-up when I get my computer back, which will probably be in 2 weeks unless they delay the repair for longer.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

thanks Andrew for sharing your experience.

I have tried on-line chat and keep emailing them but the answer is just waste of time (flashing BIOS, update drive.... blah blah blah..)

My laptop have benn 1.5 years old and our of warranty. I sent email to HP to ask for sending me a courier box to send them already. I dont know if I need to pay for the repair

You have a bad motherboard. This is causing the wireless to not work. Eventually the computer will die. Demand that they fix it for free, even if your computer is out of warrenty. You are due a free repair for this problem.

For more information on this problem, do a google search for "Wayne Sallee" "hp".

This is a known problem, that has been going on for a long long time.

Hey Wayne,

What advice can you give me about handling Tech support and there run around/lies so I don't waste time just doing there little fixes that don't work? Do I tell the straight up that I know this a common problem with majority of laptops and I'm requesting a new motherboard or laptop? I purchased an extended warranty when I bought the laptop.

Thanks

Yes tell them what you know. When they know that you know, they will realize that they can't lie to you.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

issue: wifi hardware disappearing

HP Pavilion tx1000z CTO NB
purchased march 9 2007
one year warranty
july 28 2008 i unplugged the working laptop from power, carried it to another room, plugged it back into outlet and realized that wifi light switch in front is growing amber and that windows does not see wifi hardware

up until the incident i ran vista sp1, current with all updates; bios F.1E; 2.00 A NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 Video Driver; Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista 7.00 E; HP Wireless Assistant 3.00 I; NVIDIA nForce Chipset/Network Drivers 5.53 A; Essential System Updates for Microsoft Windows Vista 2.00.

last windows update - 7/25; nothing in the event log.

the laptop was in light use, mostly as email/music/multimedia/word processing for 3-4 hrs a day. it always was connected via wifi. the manual wifi trigger was almost never used.

when the problem happened, i did all the usual steps - reinstalled drivers, flashed bios, unpowered and removed battery, etc. only once the wifi came back up after power down, battery remove for 10 minutes, and then powering back on. no amount of tinkering could bring it back afterward.

booting into linux revealed the same thing - there is no wifi hardware. the wifi switch in front keeps glowing amber.

called support, case 801-427-6116. spent 1 hr 40 minutes; got escalated from frontline (shawn?) to tech support (?) to supervisor (michelle?). according to her, they have no known cases for tx1000, but they do have a known recall for dv6000. note however, that tx1000 is relatively new (i believe my model based on amd cpu became available a month before my purchase), so that if there is a problem that manifests itself 15 months after purchase, we would see the reports starting to trickle in right about now.

the supervisor could do nothing for me, except for usual 600+ for mobo sent to me or 300+ to send in for fixes. so i gave up.

i will purchase a usb wifi card and shop around for another laptop. this was my first brush with hp after 10+ laptops over the years with other manufacturers (i buy for myself, family, friends, and recommend to others), and unless hp does something to change my opinion, it will be the last for a while.

so the only hope is to speak up and report this problem as much as you can. post similar details and call in - they track the number of calls related to a problem, and hopefully once it reaches a certain threshold, they will be forced to act.

if you remain silent, they will never even know there is a problem.

please post links to other posts discussing this. with enough concrete data we should be able to build a case and hold hp responsible. post on your blogs and link to this entry, this way google search will pick this issue up and bubble it to the top.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

Well, I thought I had lost my mind until I read the postings. I have a Presario v6101us and two days ago I woke up turned it on and all I got was the amber light on the WLAN switch. I have downloaded WLAN drivers, BIOS updates and done a complete recovery from disks and nothing. I was having no trouble with it up to the point of turning it on. I am out of warranty by 5 months. I will be giving support a call tomorrow, anything more I should know before I go off the deep end?

Hey kdenilson

I also have the same laptop as yours and I also have the same problem.

I'm still in my warranty but the problem is that I'm already living in the Philippines and a bought my Laptop in the US.

I hope HP would do something about it.

By-the-way: Do you know if the warranty can be carried to a different country? I'm just curious. LOL...

@ markee

The only way that you could do that is if you sent the laptop to someone in the US, and have them send it in for you.

My Pavilion TX 1000 did the same thing after about 15 months. I spend hours online talking to tech who went as far as to recommend a factory restore. One tech recommended taking out the wireless card and putting it back in, and for now it is working. Bad connection? Worth a try - pretty simple thing to do. Here's to hoping its a permanent fix and works for you as well.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

Hi Ankie, I had tried unpluging the wireless lan card and then re-plug, no success.

Then I found a Intel wireless lan card from a friend and then substituded it into the HP TX1000, no success.

Therefore, the problem is not the lan card itself or the contact with the wireless lan card and motherboard.

But just try this luck, i think this would work for some time.

Furthermore, I really need to express my thankful to HP to make such an incredible machine that we can try our luck.

When we are down or frustrated, just try to plug/unplug the lan card, reboot, update, whatsoever;
1)if the wireless appear again, WOW !! You are lucky today !!!
2)if the wireless did not show up and say hi to you, it is normal !! Don't be sad. Eventually one day it will smile to you

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

I seem to have figured out the resolution to the wireless assistant not working problem.

I have two Presario s with Vista OS. Just like I read countless others posting the sudden disappearing wireless assistant also described as their system not seeing their wireless cards, I experienced the same thing.

Normally fixes are easy to find on the Internet But this one seems really illusive.

I tried system restore points three times and finally did a full new factory system revert. With Vista you reboot and tap the F-11 key and use the options to revert back to factory settings. That did not fix the wireless assistant issue. Ive spend four hours reading the HP tech support and other forums and no one has the answer. I fixed the issue in this way:

Go to - Start, run and enter devmgmt.msc and hit the enter key.

Once the device manger is open find the + sign next to Network Adapters.

This will reveal your wireless network controller. Now left click to highlight and then right click on the network controller and select the option: Update driver software. This will allow the driver update to find the network controller and apply the fix. Simply downloading the new driver from HP ##will not work.

Now reboot your computer. Your blue light should be back on. Now a mouse hover over the connection icon in your system tray will show that you are not connected to a network but will see the router or networks that were not there before. Use the Connect to a network option there to connect your wireless connection.

I hope this helps and I dont mind giving others help if they encounter the same issue.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

Hey Peeps,

I bought my Tx1000 from my friend in HK for a bargain and last weekend the wireless card disappeared.

I spent two weeks trying every trick I could find from all the forums.

This ranged from - trying a system restore, to updating Nivia Graphics card, Flashing BIOS, to entering command prompts to update Wireless SSID recognition.

Two things worked - One slightly the other permanently

The first thing that worked was removing all power and holiding off button for 2 mins - on restarting - the system said new hard ware found installing broadcom drivers. This worked.. and then it disappeared after hibernation.

The second thing was to do a system check and install the broadcom drivers - on doing so - I was given the message - drivers in stalled and wireless card switched on. I have not had any trouble since.

Links attached - NOTE - when installing drivers. The run button only extracts data to the C drive. You have to note the path and run set up from the extracted file.

Hope it works for you guys and girls

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

Hi guy, i am brazlian and do not speak a very good english, so i will do my best

i have the same problem that all u guys have, and i read on another forum, that for Xp a windows update, being more specific a "hotfix" kills your wireless.

when i look for the update that the guy on the another forum told i didn't find it, so i remove all others hotfix, and for my surprise, it works.

and don't know if it works for windows vista, but worth a shot.

i hope u guys have the same luck as i am. bye to all.!!!

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

I have the same problem with my wireless card as do thousands of other people who purchased HP laptops. If HP cared at all they would do a formal recall and fix the problem. This has cost me money when I really needed to get on the network, but could not use the wireless card.

Re: Pavilion TX1000 Wireless Card Vanish !!!

I am a computer tech and a chip design engineer and as far as I can see is that the dv2000/6000/9000 and tx1000 share the same architecture. They share the same parts and HP R&D probably just changed the physical form factor (size of the board) to fit it in all these products. From their FAQ regarding the new BIOS, all they are doing is spinning the fan faster to cool your parts inside. It's not rocket science that many laptops have failed, it's thermal diffusion in the semiconductor which speeds up exponentially at high temperatures. I've spoke with the tech support and eventually head quarters and they aren't doing anything for my friend who owns the tx1000. The people at HP actually acknowledged that they've had a lot of instances but there's no company wide action yet for the tx1000. So I encourage all of you to call head quarters and raise your voice, DIRECT LINE 1-905-206-4725. You deserve better.
