problems after i got wireless

Hope someone can help me.
I just got wireless internet and it works great. I have a pavilion xt953 with windows me. I installed a ethernet card into my computer. But now when i go to shut down my computer it acts like it is shutting down and the monitor goes off, and the lights go off on the tower but i can still hear it running. And from there I cant do anything. it wont turn back on when i push the start button. At that time i have to push and hold the start button for about five seconds and then i can hear it shut all the way down. Then I push the button again and it will start back up. It never did this before i installed the ethernet card, and got the wireless. HELP
I have been told that hp's are bad for doing this, that when you installd a lan card that sometimes it keeps the power on to it.
Then i was told that i might need a patch for my os.
I dont know all that much about computers so i hope there is an expert out there that can help me or at least steer me in the right direction.
thanks

Re: problems after i got wireless

Hi Chris,

Let me explain to you what's happening.

When you shut down your computer, your operating system sends 'terminaison signals' to all devices, asking them to stop. Then it waits for them to be stopped while shuting down everything.

What happens with your Windows Me is that, after everything is stoped, your Wireless card still get connection to your Access Point. This make the system wait for it to stop, which never happens. It has no link with HP, but with Windows Me.

When you push the button for 6 seconds, you force the system to stop, this is a feature of all ATX type box and motherboard (the idea was to prevent to reboot on pushing by accident, 6 seconds implies that you know you are doing it).

OK what to do now ?

1. Go to the wireless card maker site (you didn't mention it's brand, but I think you can find it). Download the latest driver for your card and Windows Me. Uninstall the card, and re-install it with the new driver.

2. Go to update microsoft.com, and download all the updates for your system. They contain many patches to correct windows Me problems.

3. Let us know if it doesn't fix !
