10500 SFP+ module types

Hi there, I want to install a new 10G SFP+ module in our 10508 switch but I'm not sure which to choose. They have a different name. Some are "SF", some "EC" and some "SG". What does that mean? Is it just a different chip or are there incompatibilities?

Example:

HPE FlexNetwork 10500 48-port 1/10GbE SFP+ SG Module (JH197A)

HPE FlexNetwork 10500 48-port 10GbE SFP+ SF Module (JC756A)

HPE FlexNetwork 10500 24-port 1/10GbE SFP+ EC Module (JH194A)

I looked in the 10500 guide, but there are only incompatibilities listed between different switching modules. http://h17007.www1.hpe.com/device_help/H3C-Manuals/10500/10500-Installation-Guide(20140820).pdf Thanks!

Re: 10500 SFP+ module types

Interesting question.

Different LPUs (Line Processing Units) with the same type of physical interfaces (in this case, as example, SFP+ interfaces) exist (interfaces number per LPU module varies)...exactly as you discovered: I think, reading various documentation, that those LPUs have different set of features (operating modes for recommended application scenarios) and maximum values of installed memory, maximum inbound/outbound ACL, routes, MAC, etc. [*]

Trying to answer your initial question: it's probably better to understand first which SFP+ Transceiver(s) SKU -  and how many of them at maximum - you're planning to use on your 10508 and then starting to look for the appropriate LPU (or LPUs) supporting those SFP+ Transceiver(s) considering your actual Comware OS software version v7/v5 (MPU dependant).

[*] If you look at HPE FlexNetwork 10500 Switch Series Fundamentals Configuration Guide (for R7524, as example...so for a Comware 7 based 10500 switch) you will be able to find what you're looking for:

  • Normal operating mode
  • Bridging operating mode
  • Routing operating mode
  • Mix-Bridging operating mode
  • Standard IPv6 operating mode
  • IPv6 operating mode

For each operating mode listed above EA, EB, EC (with exceptions), SC, SE (specific SE LPUs), SF and SG LPUs are then listed with their supported features and limits.

Probably you should look - typically - for SC, SE or SF LPU types only (altough that depends on your requirements in terms of LPU operating modes described above) if you are looking for SFP+ interfaces:

  • LPU: LSU1TGS16SC0 (SKU: JC628A) HP 10500 16-port 10-GbE SFP+ SC Module
  • LPU: LSU1TGS8SE0 (SKU: JC631A) HP 10500 8-port 10-GbE SFP+ SE Module
  • LPU: LSU1TGS32SF0 (SKU: JC755A) HP 10500 32-port 10GbE SFP+ SF Module
  • LPU: LSU1TGS48SF0 (SKU: JC756A) HP 10500 48-port 10GbE SFP+ SF Module

and not:

  • LPU: LSU1TGS8EA0 (SKU: JC630A) HP 10500 8-port 10-GbE SFP+ EA Module
  • LPU: LSU1TGS8EB0 (SKU: JC629A) HP 10500 8-port 10-GbE SFP+ EB Module

All SFP+ related LPUs listed above were taken from the HP FlexNetwork 10500 Switch Series FAQs based on systems running MPU with Comware 5 operating system. Comware 7 based HPE 10500 Switch Series need to be verified with regard to LPU/SKU codes reported above.

Comware 5 based HP 10500 reported (things could have been changed with Comware 7...TBV) various SFP+ supported transceivers, just as example:

  • HP X130 series SFP+ (various ranges, from SR, LRM, LR up to ER), all with LC: JD092B, JD093B, JD094B and JG234A
  • HP X240 series DAC Cables (various lenghts, from 1.2 meters up to 7 meters): JD096C, JD097C, JG081C and JC784C

So it's really a matter to understand what you have HW&SW, what you're planning to install and use and then double check various documents: latest QuickSpecs (for 10500 running Comware 5/7 and 10G Transceivers supported by Comware 5/7), related Fundamentals Configuration Guide, related Release Notes and FAQs.

Edit: I haven't listed available LPUs supporting 1G/10G SFP+ Transceivers (to retrofit 1G SFP Transceivers into SFP+ interfaces), just the LPUs specifically supporting 10G SFP+ ones.
