Hi,
We have a 3com 4800g switch, and we have a problem with slow logging on to the device and slow tabs opening over the web.
SSH works ok.
We tried different browsers, Chrome, Firefox, IE.
We also tried the old versions of the browsers (IE6, Mozilla 1.4.), but it's similar, a little better.
Do you have any suggestions, how we can fix this, we would avoid reboot the switch.
Thanks a lot
Best regards
NIkola

SolutionNikola,
Can you check to make sure that if there is a DNS setting that the addresses are correct for your network? Can you also check your upstream connections to make sure that they aren't dropping packets?
What is the uptime on your switch? If it has been up forever it might be worth a restart.
Another thing you can try is to undo ip http and undo ip https to shut down the web server and then ip http enable and ip https enable to start it again. That might help.
Regards,
David

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
David,
Thanks your for help, and your troubleshooting ideas.
DNS is OK. The switch works great. No packet loss, flow per ports are not on the physical port limit.
The switch uptime is 1 year and 11 months.
I'll try "undo ip http enable" and then "ip http enable" , also "undo ip https enable" "ip https enable" after weekend.
Switch reboot is option, if this do not solves the problem.
Regards,
Nikola

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
Hi, if not already done before, give a refresh to its software by updating (and rebranding to HP) the old 3Com 4800G to latest HPE Comware 5.20 R2222P08 (2017), I did and it works flawless.

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
HI,
Great, thanks for the information that there is an update.
But, since the switch is in production, currently it cannot be updated.
But later, when we will be making changes in the network, the update will be great.
Regards,
Nikola

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
Hi Parnassus and Nikola!
One caution here. You will most likely need to do an interim upgrade before you jump to the latest code. I can locate the version you will need... you need to set the brand to HPE before you upgrade to the latest or the boot up will fail.
I'll get you the version where the brand command was introduced so that you can boot that, set the brand, and then boot into the latest code.

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
As Parnassus tracked down, you need to load R2215 in order to change/set the brand correctly. Once that is done, you can then boot into the latest code. The release notes spell out everything that needs to be done. There is also a manual bootrom upgrade that needs to be done as well. That BTM file should be in the software kit.

Hi!
You did. I read your post and it was great. I had to go to a staff meeting which is why I had to delay that response.

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
Hi,
A month ago I was reboot the switch, and now web access has slowed down again.
I started learning ssh console
I need help with the trivial part, how to save the configuration via ssh.
Is it just save, or save [safely], or something else?
Software Version 5.20 Release 2202P15

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
Hi! it's all explained on the 3Com Switch 4800G Family Configuration Guide. Specifically to save the actual running configuration into the Switch's flash memory (so it will survive to a switch reboot which is what you want, isn't it?) just use the save main (or, better, the save safely main slower but more secure variant) and also the save backup (or, better, the save safely backup variant) CLI commands. No matter if you're connected via SSH, Telnet or Serial Console.
Edit: I suggest you to familiarize with CLI and then to learn how to update/upgrade, once done plan an upgrade to very latest R2222P12 (see here, the 4800G switch series running software is equivalent to the one used on 5500 EI switch series) or - at least - to follow recommended version available here (use 5500 EI as reference): the R2202P15 software version you 4800G is running on is not just old, it is really ancient (probably more than 10 Years old, see here)!

Re: 3Com Switch 4800G 24-Port - slow logging on device and slow managment
Thank you so much for the help,
You are right, I wanna save my current running configuration, to avoid loss of configuration if there is a power failure, or switch is rebooted.
I learning the ssh configuration, the better way is for sure.
Switch software is very old, and I have an upgrade on my mind.
Thanks a lot and best regards.
Nikola
