So H3C released a new switch: S5130-EI

- layer 2

- dual power supply

- Comware 7

- 10GbaseT and/or 10GbaseX

Unfortunately, there are still those strange software limits:

VLAN interfaces: 32
ARP entries: 1000
ND entries: 512

So will we finally get a HP A5130-EI layer 2 switch with dual power supplies in rest of the world?

32 VLAN interfaces: if your design calls for more than 2 or 3 VLANs and more than one VLAN interface on an Access-Layer switch, you're doing your design wrong.

1000 ARP entries: the only devices the switch should be communicating with at Layer3 are your various monitoring/management servers: syslog, SNMP, TFTP, NTP, maybe Radius etc... So maybe half-a-dozen, max, nowhere near 1000.

You know, not all H3C switches will come to Europe/US. I'm still waiting for the H3C 5120-HI. :-(

And when you look on your datasheet only the 5130-32F will have two hotswap PSU.

You´re right only the fiber switch has dual power supply :-( And the S5120-HI will never appear as HP. But H3C provides english manuals for the S5130-EI, which is not the case for many other H3C devices: http://h3c.com/portal/Technical_Support___Documents/Technical_Documents/Switches/H3C_S5130_Series_Switches/ and it´s time for a layer 2 switch baed upon Comware. (Well that was already the case with S5120-HI...)

Talking about the mentioned limits. It´s a software limit and I don´t remember any other vendor that does the same.

I once bought HP v1910 switches , i.e. H3C S5120-SI based and din´t look at the release notes before... And noticed the ARP table limit of 256 while using those devices... It would have been great if HP advertised those limits in its datasheets, aswell. And not only within the release notes...

Whats the true relation between HP and H3C nowadays?

Since H3C seems to still be releasing hardware and software on their own?

H3C is a big player within china/asia and therefore the brand "H3C" is being used there instead of "HP".

Yes, the A5130 has finally arrived:

It´s a standard layer 2 switch with some basic/limited routing capabilities. No Shortest Path Bridging (IEEE 802.1aq).  price for the 48 port version (JG937A) is 1899,-€ including taxes. Well, nothing special at all. At least it has HP´s lifetime warranty.

- So, HP A5130 has 48x 1Gbe@RJ45 port + 4x SFP+

But there are better options for updated layer 2 devies nowadays, e.g. HP 5700

- Double the price and you can get 40x 10Gbe@RJ48 + 2x 40Gbe@QSFP+)

- Pay 500,-€ more and get 48x 1Gbe@RJ45 + 4x 10Gbe@SFP+ + 2x 40Gbe@QSFP+)

including TRILL/DCB/FCoE support with its inbuilt Broadcom Trident ASIC

Hi,

True that the 5700 series is way superior.

But still, if you have no need for 10Gbit/s. downlinks, and need to deploy in an already existing environment.

- The 5130 has nice physical dimensions to fit in small wireing closets.

- It runs comware 7.

- 10G uplinks.

I asked our supplier, and the price-fraction was more like 1/3 of the price for the 5130 compared to the 5700 (which still makes the 5700 rediculously cheap for a 10Gbit/s switch.

I think the 5130 is a very nice upgrade to th 5120. Depending on the deployment scenario I can see why people might lean towards the 5700 series.

Hi all

5700 is designed for datacenter and has no PoE option and (at the moment) there is no 24 gig-port version. Because that in my opinion the 5700 is not usable for client access.

But of course it depends on your design and requirements.

The 5130 is a very nice upgrade to the 5120, but with some limitations to 10G transceivers and cables (no LRM, no >= 7m DAC SFP+). They are not suppored, but hopfully working (not tested yet). Any experiences with LRM and 7m DAC on 5130?
