Is it ok to run 5710 on 250W PSU

Hi All

Just about to order some power supllies and a couple of 5710 JL585A - version with SFP ports.

The switch is going to be ran as IRF stack of 2 as a core switch. I can see that 450W and 250W PSU's are available for this model,  JL592A and JL589A respecteviley.

I believe but I want to hear some opitions that 450 version would be for the variation of the switch with copper access ports and 250W for one with SFP's?

Do you think I'm ok with 250W for this specific model? Each switch would have two PSU's installed.

Hello pattap,

you could use the JL589A power supply, but you should not install 250W AC PSU and 450W AC PSU.

Note: 450W AC PSUs are compatible with JL585A but not required. The 250W AC
PSU and 450W AC PSU cannot be installed in the same switch. For 1-1 redundancy

As a best practice, use power supplies of the same model in 1+1 redundancy to power the switch.

Sorry but I'm really confused by your answer. I'm not planning on using 250 and 450 togehter in one switch.

I'm deciding between either 2 x 250W or 2 x 450W

Question is whether there are any risks of JL585A switches being uderpowered when having  250W PSU's installed.

I know it's unlikely us they are listed as compatible PSU's for this specific model, I'm just double checking if people had any bad/unexpected expierences with such a setup.

Hi, if you haven't budget constrains I would suggest you to use the most powerful supported Power Supply: go with 2 x 450W even if it's not specifically required (Simply put...the bigger the better...no matter if a single switch will just use only a fraction of power supplyies' output...having a powerful Power Supply will let it to run at a fraction of its maximum power output...so in a safer zone [*]).

[*] others may say that it's not required...and that a 250W Power Supply is engineered to work flawlessly outputting up to of its 100% rated output power...that's true. In my view just be more conservative and let the PS to run on average at a lower level...so go with the 450W.
