EVA 8000 Frequent Drive Failure

Hi,

In the past 5 days, we have 4 failed drives. We have an EVA8000 with 300GB FC drives. Can you guide me to find out its root cause please. We are very worried to have multiple disk failures and data loss.

Have you looked in logs, checked temperature? What configuration do you have?

You may need to log a case with HP and provide logs for full analysis to fix this issue.

What firmware levels are you on?
Moving to 6220 (on 8100) really improved the failure rates on ours.
BTW, 3 in less than one day was the best we had!

Get HP to check the Controller event log, or attach it compressed here. We must check the events before each drive failure to see if they were having internal errors or it was due to trouble on the loops.

In one recent case a customer had several disks failed on a few hours because they were perforating the floor nearby and the vibrations cause unrecovered read errors on multiple drives.

HP Support has some special internal tools for reading and analyzing the logs.

1: How long have you had this EVA ?
2: Were all the disks that have failed all bought and installed in the EVA at the same time??
The reason I ask it that all modern disks have an MTTF (mean time to failure) If all the disks are the same and have been in use for xxxxx no of hours then they may have reached the MTTF for the drive.
If this is the case then you MAY get several drives that all fail in a short period of time. This could be your problem.
Obviously, it could be something else and you should seek advice from HP as advised above.

Hi,

Failed disks have various ages, some about 1 year, some 2 and some more than 3 years. So I don't think the MTBF of the drives is reached.
The site always was in a good condition of cooling and dust. There is also no logs regarding to temperature overheat.
Hopefully no more failure has happened to the drives, but my boss expects me to give a reasonable cause for the failures. What can we find out from logs?
