How to update firmware on HDD in MSA1000

yes - I have followed the description you mention.

The SAN-port does not go active during the firmware update process, and it seems like the disks are not updated either.

maybe this instruction does not apply to SAN-attached MSA1000?

Don't use 7.50 fw cd, it doesn't reconize some HBA's.

I've used 7.40 and heard 7.20 firmware maintenance cd works as well.

Find out what types of disks you have and download the cpxxxxxx.scexe and save as target onto a floppy

Boot firmware maintenance cd

Goto to supplements and load disk fw from floppy

Go back to main screen and rescan you should see the disks. Upgrade the disks, after upgrade power down/up the msa

Always have a full backup before upgrading fw.

Yes, I have done several disk drive fw updates, with no problems. Although I would have a full backup any time I did any type of fw updates.

I've tried to do the firmware update and can't get anywhere. I have the 7.60 firmware update cd. I have the MSA1000 connected to a DL 360 server via a QLogic FC card. If I boot the MSA utilities CD on the server I can run the array configuration utility and see all the drives (so I know the server can talk to the MSA1000).

If I boot the firmware update CD the firmware update manager sees the two local SCSI drives but it refuses to see any of the drives on the MSA1000.

I have verified that the firmware update CD contains updated firmware for several of the drives in the MSA1000.

The MSA1000 is running V7.00 firmware, it has two controllers running active/active. I tried disabling one of the controllers to see if that helped - but it didn't

Any advice on what I could try next?

There has been some poblems with the Server seeing MSA disks. Some of the Smart Start CD's don't have all the HBA drivers loaded.

There is a new Smart Start CD comming out 7.80 in the next week or two that should have most if not all HBA drivers loaded.

What kind of HBA do you have?

Yes, I tried the suggestions from Ray B, but it didn't help. I have verified that the FW update utility has updated firmware for the disks in the MSA1000 but it appears the firmware update utility can't see the MSA1000

The host adapter is a QLogic QLA2340 - it's listed as one of the supported ones for doing disk firmware updates on MSA1000

7.60 was the only version of the CD I could find for download, I'll watch for the 7.80 version in the next few weeks and see if it's any better.

I located firmware 7.20 and was able to update the disk firmware using that kit.

I am booting from Hardware Maintenance CD 7.2 or 7.4 and then try to add supplemental firmware from USB Key for the 300GB hard disks. It says it can't read the CP007410.scexe file from the USB Key. If I try to add supplemental firmware again, it says it already has read CP007410.scexe. What gives?

Floppy? the CP007410.scexe file is 1.8MB - too big to fit on a floppy.

I also tried to make a floppy image with CP007140.scexe or CP007410.scexe file. Then I connected the image as a floppy via ILO Virtual Media. Booted with Hardware Maintenance CD 7.2 or 7.4, tried to add supplemental firmware.

Same result - unable to read from file CP007140.scexe or CP007410.scexe

Is something wrong with these files?

Foe me, 7.61 and 7.70 firmware cd's worked again (I think 7.40 thru 7.60 did not work)

There was an article posted (which unfortunately I can't find now) that noted how recent firmware update CDs were missing some fibrechannel drivers and couldn't update disks on MSA1000s. This was supposed to be fixed in 7.80.

I've downloaded 7.80 and it still doesn't work. I've tried with two different FC adapters (QLA2340 and FCA2101 (Emulex) ). Neither of them permits the FW update utility to see the disks on the MSA1000.

What gives? I haven't found a firmware update disk newer than 7.20 that will work. Both of these adapters work fine with the 7.20 firmware disk.

Malcolm,
Put the FCA2101 in your server. No Qlogic, installed. Flash the FCA2101 FW to the latest rev, 3.93A0. Retry 7.80.
