HPE Smart Array P816i-a, missing 3rd enclosure (Internal Drive Cage)

I've just rerceived a storage upgrade to my ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server: 5 x 20TB HDD. The new 20TB discs had been hot installed by a technician and I wanted to start building a new array, but I the controller, P816i-a, could detect only 1 new disc.

Front of the server

It seems the 3rd cage has a probkem or is not connected. I restarted the server remotely, but nothing changed.

The server is used by multiple projectw 24/day and finding a maintenance time window is not very easy.

Is there anythong I can do before stopping the provcessing and checking the cabling? It was never opened and it's the second storage upgrade - first time adding 2 new discs was sraightforward.

Is it possible, that the server was delivered without the 3rd cage connected to the controller?

here is the controller/server info:

Re: HPE Smart Array P816i-a, missing 3rd enclosure (Internal Drive Cage)

is all the firmware updated to the same version? maybe a good first step before additional debugging

Hi,

Before you proceed to do any activity, make sure you have a valid data backup!

If it is an application server, I'd suggest to get the logs analyzed by logging an HPE Support ticket.

Anyways, can you share the firmware versions of the controller, BIOS and iLO?

@ngnear

This is what I found in the diag report regarding the versions:

[ HPE Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen10 in Embedded Slot ] → Identify Controller
Configured Logical Drives 1 (0x01)
Configuration Signature 0x02d2b8b1
RAM Firmware Revision 3.53
ROM Firmware Revision 3.53
Hardware Revision 0x00
Boot Block Revision 6.06
Drive Present Map 0x00000000
External Drive Map 0x00000000

Swapped Cable Flags 0x00
Non Disk Map 0x00000000

CPU Revision 0x20
PDPI Revision 0x00
EPIC Revision 0x00
WCXC Revision 0x00
Marketing Revision A
Controller Flags 0x8c

...

And this is probably the most relevant part of the diag report:

[ Top ] → [ HPE Smart Array P816i-a SR Gen10 in Embedded Slot ] → Backplane Discovery Protocol Current

Solution

Re: HPE Smart Array P816i-a, missing 3rd enclosure (Internal Drive Cage)

The problem has been solved. The plug of the cable from the controller was not fully in the socket of the Box 3. It was enough to push it to get the "click" sound confirmirming the correct position of the plug.

After the "fix", all the drives were properly recognised:
