This might vary between the different array controllers.

Also are you making a RAID in an optical jukebox?? =)

For smartarray controllers:
1.) Yes
2.) Yes, but remember that if for example you have 3x 450GB and 1x 1000GB then you will have 550GB unusable on the 1TB disk.

Maybe this also depends a bit on the definition of 'OK' but both are possible anyway.
