Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Can anyone suggest a quick and dirty way to connect a ~250Gb disk to a C3700 running HP-UX 11.00? Disk has not yet been purchased, so your suggestions as to the cheapest way to accomplish this are welcomed.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Hi,

The largest disk drive supported with C3700 is 73GB Ultra2 Wide SCSI LVD hard drive - 10000 RPM, 3.5in form factor, 1.0in high, 80-pin SCA connector.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Hi Sameer, sorry I'm not very knowledgeable about disks. Is this an internal disk? Could I use an external disk to get the required capacity?

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

I am guessing that the 250GB disk you have is a SATA or IDE Drive, so the quick answer is no, because the C3700 only supports SCSI.

You will have to get a SCSI Drive, which come in 18, 36, 73, 146, and 300GB Sizes. The highest size that HP sells is 73GB for the C3700.

As far as adding external drives, this is possible, but you will probably be limited to SCSI Drives.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Hi Josh. I haven't yet purchased a disk. I'll use whatever's cheap and will work! As I'm looking for around 250Gb, the 300Gb SCSI will do nicely. As HP don't do above 74Gb I'll have to find an alternative. Can you suggest anything? How about the interface from the external disk to the C3700 - can you foree any problems or limitations?

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Simon,

What disk(s) are in the server currently? If you only have 1 disk in there right now, you may be able to mount a new disk internally, in the disk tray. Make sure that you get a SCSI disk with an 80-pin SCA connector if you are going to put one internal. all you would have to do is pull out the drive tray on the front, and use the included screws to mount the drive to the tray, and re-insert.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Hi Josh, I really do need the ~250Gb capacity so I guess that an internal disk is not an option if they only go up to 73Gb.
And, yes, both internal disk trays are already used.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

OK, you'll probably need an external disk array if both internals are already taken. I don't think that there's any way to slap another disk inside that box, since it is already cramped as it is.

A supported configuration would be the following:

A6828A - Ultra160 SCSI card
A7382AD - DS2120 Disk enclosure
A7384A - 300GB 10k Disk Drive
C2362B - 2.5meter SCSI Cable

The list price of this equipment runs north of $5,000 USD. You may be able to contact some equipment resellers that can get you something less expensive. Remember that you usually get what you pay for.

Hi Simon we have 300GB Hot Plug Ultra2 Wide SCSI LVD 10k Disk Drives for around 850, there internal for all of the Visualize workstations, C3700 included.

Re: Add cheap disk to HP-UX C3700

Hi Josh, OK thanks for that. I really was looking to pay a less (what a meanie!). I quite understand that 'you get what you pay for', but could you offer any cheaper suggestions?
