adding a biger hard drive

i have a presario 5wv254 with a 20 gb hard drive, i put in a mextor 40 gb hard drive but can only format it the same as the 20gb that came with the machine and because of tring to store avi. files i need the extra space, other then buy windows me ?
i got into video after i bought this machine.

i have a presario 5BW130 with a 15gb and i want to put a 20gb and i want to use the recovery disc to install it
