Adding new scsi device

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to add a new scsi hard disc to an HP-UX 11i system. The new disc is lvd and I'm adding it to a string of single-ended devices, so I've used a converter.

The old set up was:
initiator device 7 attached to tape drive
tape drive device 3 attached to DVD-ROM
DVD-ROM device 1 terminated.

I have today removed the terminator from the DVD-ROM drive and attached a converter, to which I have given the device number 6. The converter is attached to a new hard disc, device number 5. The hard disc has a terminator in it.

When I reboot the server it can see the old devices but not the converter or the new hard disc - I thought it would pick them up automatically. The fact that it can see the old things suggests it's treating the converter as a terminator.

I shut down the server and turned off all devices before I did anything else. I set the device numbers before I attached things to each other and I turned on all the peripherals before I turned on the server.

Any ideas?

Re: Adding new scsi device

I read it as SCSI ID 7 is allocated for tape drive...In that case it is possible that The SCSI interface card has an ID = 5 ??.

Confirm it with ioscan -fn

Default SCSI Interface as an id of 7

change scsi id of harddisk to 4 and check ...

OR

Remove the terminator from hard disk and then terminate the cable with the old terminator after hard disk

Re: Adding new scsi device

Are you sure the converter is the correct type to convert SE to LVD ?

You could try to dettach all devices and only connect the converter and disk to the controller, just to make sure it is not a problem with cable lengths etc.
Every problem has at least one solution. Only some solutions are harder to find.

Re: Adding new scsi device

Hi Kaps,

No; the scsi initiator is device 7.
The tape drive is 3.
The DVD-ROM drive is 1.
The converter is 6.
The hard disc is 4.

Re: Adding new scsi device

Hi,
Do you really need a converter ? If I don't remember wrong, LVD and SE devices is compatible (but not HVD devices) ?

Re: Adding new scsi device

What does ioscan say about 4,6 devices ?.
Can you replace the hard disk's internal terminator with an external one and give it a try ?

Re: Adding new scsi device

Hi Elmar,

The converter is definitely a single-ended to lvd (and I should probably point out that I have connected the single-ended device to the port that says single-ended and the lvd device to the port that says differential).

Cable lengths is an interesting point. There are users logged in at the moment, so I can't try what you've suggested just yet, but while I'm waiting for a suitable chance can you tell me what the recommendations are on cable length? Two of the cables in the link are approx. 2 metres long.

Re: Adding new scsi device

ioscan doesn't pick up devices 4 and 6.

Re: Adding new scsi device

I think Elmar has given me the answer.

I've just gone on to google and typed in "scsi cable length". I found a page that recommended a maximum of five feet of cable for the amount of devices I'm attaching. And that maximum is a total for all the cables, not each cable!

I'll sort out new cables then come back and give everyone their points. Sorry if this takes a while.
