adding second hard drive

I am trying to tranfer maxtor hard drive from win98 computer to new hp 753n. I have tried everything I can think of but cannot get the hp to recognize the second hard drive. I would appreciate any help with this matter....

expound on your installation. 2 IDE drives now?
How attached to IDE cable? Master/Slave?

Original seagate hard drive on hp 753n (80 gb) connected as master, (black connector)with jumpers set to cable select.
Older hard drive, maxtor 60 gb, trying to connect as slave, (grey connector).

I set jumpers in every combination. None worked. It is presently running on a dell, running windows 98, with the jumpers set horizontly on top row middle pins. No where is this configuration shown, but this is how it has been working for a year or two.
