Cylinders is another name for tracks. Its almost an obsolete term these days.

Not sure in HP world, but tracks and cylinders are still alive and well in IBM mainframe environments.

Totally dependent upon the disk type.
We calculate calculate thusly -
for a 3390
15 tracks per cylinder
3338 cylinders for a 3390
50070 tracks

While track calculations may not be used extensively in hp-ux, they still are on other platforms.

Disk cylinders are virtually obsolete due to relative addressing, track sparing and variable sector layouts. If you are using any type of disk array, tracks and cylinders, even the physical disk are totally hidden behind the controller's firmware. Most modern disks are addressed by absolute sector number and the drive itself figures out just where the sector is located.
