How to do the partition and format of a Compaq Presario 7477 Hard Disk

I need to make a new partition to the HDD, different from the original one. I try to do it, but then the Hdd didn??t boot. I test the disk in other pc and it works perfectly. But when i install it in the Compaq I doesn??t boot and it says that there was a System Disk Error. This machine has a system (soft or hard) that avoid the use of another type of partition different from the original one? Is there anyway to partitionate the disk and make it work properly. Please help me. Thaks.
