How can I tell this from the model number, servers are DL380 G2 with external hotplug drives.

One option may be to go here and put in the model number and see what it comes back with. often the description has the drive speed in it:

I looked on google to find this, but it took a little digging. If you post the model numbers I can probably find out what the specs are. look at this page for a start:

unfortunately, I could not find an english version of the site. what i gathered from this site is that the second letter determines the speed of the drive. D = 10k, F = 15k. I know that the next few (5?) numbers are the drive size, and I imagine that the last few characters are some sort of firmware or other identifier.
