Re: Forum feedback
This seems as good a place as any to leave Feedback - hope you don't mind, Vo!
I don't see any way to recognize whether a post is from the author of the thread or not. If threads are to remain on topic, focused and valuable for historical reference (if we can ever search them, that is), it is helpful to be able to recognize that the discussion is between the author and the people trying to help him. With no way of identifying the author, the thread becomes unfocused and wanders off into various unrelated issues - kind of like I'm doing now.

Pete - I'm not sure I follow - was there something on the ITRC forums that did this that isn't available here?

Re: Forum feedback
If my faulty memory serves, the old Forum designated all subsequent posts by the author of the thread with the word "author". Right by their name, maybe. There's no indication now and there used to be. Wish I had a screen shot for you.

Re: Forum feedback
Thanks, Peter!
In any case, I quite often find myself scanning through posts and completely losing track of what started the whole thing - particularly since we now have the ability to jump directly to unread replies.

Re: Forum feedback
Ahh right - I had to go back to look at a screen shot. You're correct - there was an entry of "Author" in the heading of the post - it was actually because that spot *normally* displayed how many points that post had been awarded (or "Unassigned"), and since the person who started the thread couldn't award points to their own posts, that spot then displayed "N/A: Question Author".
I'll look into if we have an option to do something similar, where posts by the author are called out in some way.

Re: Forum feedback
Hi Kevin,
a short feedback:
Today I had it with the first view to the forum board (-> screenshot) - no login, no cache, no cookies (all deleted with the last close of IE).
Only once, only this single board.
I don't use compatibility view ...
Vo.

You can get the posts in hierarchical order but that doesn't help scanning for unread posts.
This reply should be under yours. Otherwise in liner order, it will be "last".
At the bottom of this post I see the whole hierarchy but only this post.

Re: Forum feedback
New Forum Feedback Topic
Each morning I go through all the categories within "Community Home > Operating Systems > HP-UX", looking for new posts. Once I've signed in, the new post count is indicated in that "board?" view. I click on the "topic?", "General" or "LVM and VxVM" for example and read each post which has a "new reply" count greater than zero. Occasionally, when I return to the HP-UX "board?", the new post count does not get reset to zero unless I manually go back into the "topic" and select "mark all as read".
Here's a screen shot showing "LVM and VxVM" with 1 unread

Re: Forum feedback
Part 3
As you can see, there are no New replies. Yet when I go back to the "HP-UX" view, the count remains at 1. Reloading the page has no effect, clicking to go directly to the post that supposedly has the latest reply has no effect, nothing works but going back into LVM and VxVM and selecting the "mark all as read" option.
Mind you, this is occasional and arbitrary. The morning it occured with the "General" category, worked just fine with "Languages and Scripting" and failed again with "LVM and VxVM"

Sorry about the 3 parts - I guess I should have done attachments, but I like it better when the screen shot is right there, in your face, as it were. :smileywink:

Re: Forum feedback
Pete & Peter - thanks for the info on that issue - I'll see what I can find out on that one.
On a related note, the change from "Recent Topics" to "Recent Posts" was made last night - so now, when you're at a category level (like HP-UX), and you click the "View All" link, you should be taken to a list of all recent replies, sorted by when each reply was made (and not by when the thread was started). Let me know if this is better and behaves the way you want/need it to.

Re: Forum feedback
Peter - we are looking at adding something along those lines with one of our upcoming site refreshes - that involves a bit more than changing an existing applet to another, like we did last night with Topics vs. Posts.

Re: Forum feedback
What the ... looks like I was too quick to celebrate - the recent topics to recent posts change was not that success I expected to be - I see this list flooded with posts on intensively discussed topics - instead of displaying every post sorted by timestamp just put there the last post of each topic - it's like recent topics but sorted on last post timestamp and not topic creation timestamp
Oh I see another topic on this issue open, so it's not just me
