Anyone know how is that Gmail can provide so much storage capacity and availability?

How can be an infraestructure like that? Fault tolerance, backup, etc.?

I really cannot imagine that.

I really doubt that a free email service like Gmail does backups...

I don't know what they bought, but my educated guess is a lot of entry-level or midrange arrays like MSA and/or EVA. Whatever was cheapest, is my guess.

It just doesn't make sense to use something like an XP for a free service.

Yeah - cool. Grid storage in practice.

I wonder how really cost-effective it is in their implementation...
