3PAR 7200, Hyper-V, SQL Server and block size
We are in the initial fase of moving to our new 3PAR storage. On Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts we are running a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM with SQL Server 2008 R2 installed (sadly not 2012 yet), with 2 SQL Server data files of about 700GB and 260GB and a log file of about 40GB for our Dynamics NAV enviroment.
For the data files we've created a RAID 5 volume on FC disks and use AO to optimize data between FC and SSD disks. For the log files we've created a RAID 1 volume on FC disks.
Does anyone have recommendations for this configuration?
In the past on traditional storage it was best practice to size the Windows disks to 64K block size. As suggested by our 3PAR implementing partner, we should set the block size to default. But I've also read that 3PAR storage stores data in block of 16K. What would be the optimized setting for block size or does it even matter?
Thanks,
Niels
