Hi,
I am trying to spin down a few disks on a 3PAR 8440-4 storage by executing the following commands:
cli% setpd ldalloc off 82;removespare -f 82:a;movepd -f -perm 82;dismisspd 82;controlpd spindown <Node_WWN>
and getting the following error:
Error: Could not find relocation target for one or more chunklets
The same error is not printed when executing the command
movepdtospare -f -devtype -ovrd -perm -nowait 82
instead of:
movepd -f -perm 82
The options specified in the command ('movepdtospare -f -devtype -ovrd -perm -nowait') are:
-f: Force the move even if the disk is in use.
-devtype: Specifies the device type of the disk to be moved.
-ovrd: Overrides any restrictions or warnings.
-perm: Moves the disk permanently to the spare disk.
-nowait: Moves the disk without waiting for confirmation.
The array has plenty of free space for the LDs:
cli% showspace -cpg SSD_r*

Like seen in the output above, I already the command 'movepdtospare -f -devtype -ovrd -perm -nowait' for 2 disks, and for the third disk the operations is being executed at the time the output was taken.
So, my questions are:
1. How to identify the root cause for the error "Error: Could not find relocation target for one or more chunklets"?
2. Is it safe and advised to use the command with all the given options i.e. 'movepdtospare -f -devtype -ovrd -perm -nowait'?

SolutionHi vp77dw,
1. Both movepd and movepdtospare does exactly the same. So would like to see in detail what/why there was an issue while running movepd at the first place. Please open a case with support if you eager to know the reason for the failure.
2. You can use the command safely if want to remove the PDs permanetly.

Hello,
Thank you for your help.
With the movepdtospare command we were able to spin-down the required disks.
