Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

Sure @RanjithKumarb36. Before that, I need to analyse your existing drive occupancy and CPG pattern. Can you please share the below command outputs?

showcage -d
showpd
showpd -i
showcpg -sdg

Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

Hello @RanjithKumarb36,

That is fine. I could make out from the existing logs only. Your SSDs are 4 each on Cage0 and Cage2. And CPGs must be using HA mag. You can add 4 more SSDs to the existing bunch of drives. Cage1 slots 12, 13, 14 and 15 will be ideal for the new SSDs.

Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

Dear Srini,

Thank you for the inputs. Now my concern is here.

1) We are planning to add 1.92TB SSD Disks (Since 920GB is Expired), is it possible on ths setup?

2) Pre-Sales team says that we have to add only 8 Disks for the new setup, we cant add only 4 Disks. can you advise?

Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

Hello @RanjithKumarb36,

Set size for SSD drive CPGs is 2 or 4 and the availability level is 'ha mag'. So, if you are adding SSDs, you can add 4 or multiples of 4 drives at once.

If you are adding FC drives, you must add 8 or multiples of 8 drives at once.

So, the direct answer to your query is 'yes, you can add 4 drives to your 3PAR system'.

Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

@sbhat09

Hi Srini,

Thats a good news for me and the Client. But my another doubt is ""We are planning to add 1.92TB SSD Disks, the existing with 920GB, how the utilization will be in?

Will it take complete 1.92TB or 920GB as per the RAID config?

Re: Can we add 4 Disks on 3PAR 8200?

Hello @RanjithKumarb36,

Your concern is right with the traditional storage systems where the drives will be elementary resources to form a RAID group or Logical Disks.
3PAR is different and advanced in this matter. Here the drive's storage capacity will be divided into chunklets of 1gb each. Here the system will pick the chunklets as per the set size (or multiples of the set size) from different drives to form an LD.
In this case (SSDs, ha mag, set size 4), the system will pick 4 chunklets from 4 different SSDs to form an LD. Those 4 chunklets may be sourced from either 920gb drives or 1.92tb drives. When 920gb SSDs are exhausted, 1.92tb drives will be utilized more. So, their capacity will not go waste.
I tried to keep it simple and short. Drop me a private message if you need more details on this.

Srinivas Bhat
