Hello Team,
I am using a 3par 8200 and I want to remove a physical disk, it's nee to remove for another purpose but the disk is under CPG, is there any possibility to loss the data?

Re: Permanently remove a physical disk form storage
Hi tauhidul,
When removing a physical disk from an HPE 3PAR storage system, it is important to follow proper procedures to ensure data integrity and minimize any potential risks.
Below are the steps to remove a physical disk from an HPE 3PAR 8200 storage system:
1. Before removing a disk, make sure your storage system has sufficient redundancy and that the remaining disks can handle the workload.
This typically involves having a redundant RAID configuration, such as RAID 5 or RAID 6, to protect against disk failures.
2. Check the status of the disk you want to remove to ensure it is not in a failed or degraded state.
If the disk is already in a critical condition, it is recommended to replace it before proceeding.
3. Evacuate the data from the disk you want to remove. This involves redistributing the data across the remaining disks in the system.
The 3PAR storage system should have built-in data migration tools that allow you to perform this operation without data loss.
4. Verify that the data migration process is complete and that all data has been successfully moved off the disk you wish to remove.
This step is crucial to avoid any data loss during the disk removal process.
5. Once the data evacuation is confirmed, you can take the disk offline and physically remove it from the storage system.
Follow the instructions for safely removing the disk, ensuring proper grounding and handling procedures.
Remember that any modifications to your storage system, including disk removal or disk replacement,
should be performed with caution and preferably during maintenance windows to minimize any potential impact on data availability and system performance.
Do get back to us, if you need further help.

Satish

Re: Permanently remove a physical disk form storage
Hello Satish,
Thanks for your reply, My query was about the step of procedures for removing it from the system then I will remove it physically, Please share the procedure for how can I remove it from the system step by step.
Note: alike first need to stop the service of PD then remove CGP then remove chunk, as like steps and commands also
thanks and regard

Re: Permanently remove a physical disk form storage
Hello Satish,
your shared reference for (never been used from a CPG perspective) but our disk already belongs under CPG, can I follow the below steps Is it,s suitable, or have another suggestion for me?
===============
RemovePD
Step Command Purpose
1 setpd ldalloc off <DiskID> To stop data to drive - Repeat for all PDs
2 showpd -s Make sure disks are in Degraded state
3 movepdtospare -f -vacate -nowait <DiskID> Vacate all data from PD
4 showpdch -mov See the Remaining chunklets to be moved
5 movech -perm -ovrd X:Y OPTIONAL: If getting an error, move Chunklet manually (example X is the PDID and Y is the Chunklet number) repeat till disk is empty
6 showpdch -spr <DiskID> Shows the Spare chunklets on the PD
7 removespare PDID:a Removes the Spare chunklets from the PD
8 dismisspd <DiskID> Dismisses the PD from the 3PAR
9 Redo Steps 3-7 for all PDs
10 Remove All PDs from Cage Remove the vacated PDs from the 3PAR
11 tunesys -chunkpct 1 Tune System

Re: Permanently remove a physical disk form storage
Hi tauhidul,
Before you remove the PD, you should move all the chunklets to another PD using the below command.
Syntax - #movech PDID:CHID-PDID:CHID PDID:CHID-PDID:CHID
For example move the chunklet in position 0 on disk 24, to position 50 on disk 64, and
the chunklet in position 0 on disk 25, to position 1 on disk 27.
Command example - #movech 24:0-64:50 25:0-27:1
OR
You can run the command "movepd -perm <PDID>" to move data from specified PD to a temporary location
selected by the system.
Then follw the below steps to remove PD.
Step Command Purpose
======================================================================================

Hello Satish,
Good Day, Hope you are fine and safe.
Thank you very much for your kind reply, you can't imagine how it's helpful for me, so I want to say thanks again. please don't mind, I have another question.
1. Have any data loss chances in this operation?
2. There have two cages, one cage uses 300GB 15k rpm 12 disks, and another cage uses 600GB 15k rpm 24 disks, So can we use the 600BG HDD with the 300GB HDD same cage? because only the 300GB cage has 12 slot blank.
Thanks and regard.

Re: Permanently remove a physical disk form storage
Hi tauhidul,
1. Have any data loss chances in this operation?
When removing a disk from an HPE 3PAR storage system that is part of a CPG, there is a potential risk of data loss if the CPG does not have sufficient redundancy and protection mechanisms in place.
The HPE 3PAR system is designed to provide data protection and redundancy through features like RAID, sparing, and distributed data layout. These features help ensure data availability and protect against data loss in the event of disk failures.
Before removing a disk from a CPG, it is essential to ensure that the CPG has adequate redundancy and protection mechanisms enabled. This typically involves having sufficient spare disks, parity groups, and redundancy levels configured within the CPG.
If the CPG has proper redundancy and protection settings in place, the HPE 3PAR system will automatically redistribute the data across the remaining disks in the CPG to maintain data availability and protection during the disk removal process. The system will initiate the necessary data rebuild and rebalance operations to ensure the data remains intact and accessible.
2. There have two cages, one cage uses 300GB 15k rpm 12 disks, and another cage uses 600GB 15k rpm 24 disks, So can we use the 600BG HDD with the 300GB HDD same cage?
In general, it is not recommended to mix different capacities of hard disk drives (HDDs) within the same cage in an HPE 3PAR storage system. Each cage in a HPE 3PAR system is typically designed to accommodate a specific type and capacity of drives for optimal performance and data protection.
When different capacity drives are mixed within the same cage, it can result in uneven distribution of data across the drives and may impact the overall performance and efficiency of the system. Additionally, it can complicate management and maintenance tasks.
It is best practice to maintain consistent drive capacities within a cage to ensure optimal performance and data protection. If you need to increase the capacity of your system, it is recommended to add another cage with the same type and capacity of drives as the existing cage.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Satish

Hello Satish,
Thanks for your reply, We got a spare disk in our stock, the disk part number is 810764-001, can we use this disk for 7200c 3par storage? the OS version of this storage is 3.2.2 (MU4) and patch version P51, P56, P58 ,P59, P73, P84, P92.
Thanks and Regards,
