RC groups in FAILSAFE mode

RC groups in FAILSAFE mode

We had periodic replication between 2 source arrays and one destination array in our RC setup.

We moved the two source arrays to different location after stopping the RC groups and shutting down the arrays. When the arrays are powered up,we see the RC groups (few in stopped) and few in FAILSAFE mode.

Note: We havent moved the array that was used for destination. So RC isnt set up back again.

The issue is we see those volumes under stopped RC groups but those that are in FAILSAFE mode are not visible at the host end.

Whats missed here?

Re: RC groups in FAILSAFE mode

Hi Niveda,

1. Please run the command "startrcopygroup" to restart the remote copy groups.
2. And run the command "override" to volumes to be available to the hosts.
3. Please check the RC ports enabled on both the primary and secondary arrays and check the ports are enabled on the router side after power up.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Satish

Re: RC groups in FAILSAFE mode

Hi Niveda

When you moved the two source arrays to a different location and powered them up again, it's expected to see the Remote Copy (RC) groups in either stopped or FAILSAFE mode. The RC groups are in these states because the destination array is not reachable or not properly configured at the new location.

In the case where the RC groups are in stopped mode, it means that the replication has been explicitly stopped before the arrays were moved. This is the expected behavior, and you can consider this as a manual stoppage of replication.

On the other hand, when the RC groups are in FAILSAFE mode, it indicates that the replication process failed due to the destination array not being accessible. The volumes associated with these groups may not be visible at the host end because they are in a failed state.

To resolve this issue and restore replication functionality, you need to reconfigure the RC groups to reflect the new setup. This involves updating the RC settings on the source arrays to point to the correct destination array, considering the new location. Once the configuration is updated, you can re-enable replication and the volumes should become visible at the host end again.

Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Ensure that the destination array is properly powered up and accessible at the new location.
  2. On the source arrays, update the RC settings for the affected RC groups to point to the correct destination array. This involves specifying the new IP address or hostname of the destination array.
  3. Validate the configuration and ensure that the source arrays can communicate with the destination array over the network.
  4. Enable the RC groups on the source arrays to initiate the replication process. This can be done through the array's management interface or command-line interface.
  5. Monitor the replication process and verify that the volumes associated with the RC groups are being replicated successfully.

By properly reconfiguring the RC groups and enabling replication, you should be able to restore the visibility of volumes at the host end and resume the replication between the arrays. If you encounter any difficulties or further issues, it's recommended to consult the documentation or reach out to the HPE Tech support team for assistance specific to your storage system.

Hope this helps.!!

Mahesh.
