Cheapest PA/RISC server?

Cheapest PA/RISC server?

Hello!

I have a client that wants to setup two dns servers.

I'd prefer to keep them on hpux so I'm looking for the cheapest pa/risc server available.

Is the rp2430 the cheapest that HP offers?

The only requirement that the server has is dual internal disks so I can mirror. A singel CPU and 500Mb ram should be sufficient for what I need.

Anyway, I would assume that an rp2430 is the cheapest but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything out there.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

Sean,

Believe me, I was using two 712/60 workstations for DNS back in my previous experience. If it for only DNS, depending on the number of systems that query the server, you can use a workstation like B2600.

Not to mention that you can go with used equipment and get the cost down even further.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

Hi
I tested the Configuration and pricing tool on rp2430.
It is possible to buy a rp2430 (without disk) for $1290. As this server has built in LAN console you don't need to buy a separate console or graphics card.
Disks is rather expensive if you buy from HP but you can buy a 3-party disk for about $150, for example Fujitsu MAN3184MC (I use this disk in our rp2430 servers).

So you can have a rp2430 running for less then $1500, this is a very attractive price.

A6889A HP server rp2430 1-way 650MHz Solution 1 $1,095.00 $1,095.00
B3920EA HP-UX OE Media for Servers 1 $0.00 $0.00
B3920EA UM9 HP-UX 11i version 1 1 $0.00 $0.00
B3920EA 0D1 Factory integrated 1 $195.00 $195.00
B3920EA ABA U.S. - English localization 1 $0.00 $0.00
B9088AC HP-UX OE LTU 1 CPU with system 1 $0.00 $0.00
H4396A No Additional Support 1 $0.00 $0.00
subtotal $1,290.00
quantity
total $1,290.00

grand total $1,290.00

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

If you want more memory,
third party memory is very
inexpensive.

We bought a 2 GB kit
(two 1 GB DIMMs made
by Kingston, part # KTH-LSVR/2048, for about $500 (including
FedEx)).

Installed it, in
slots 0 and 4, and it works fine.

You can buy 512 MB for $175!
(part # KTH-LSVR/512)

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

You can also get smaller, older systems on Ebay for cheap.

C110, C200, etc

I run 2 DNS servers on C110's. We have plenty of parts and a cold standby for each, ignite tape installed monthly to the backup server.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

For those who want more horsepower but still want it cheap, HP has put together some "bundles" which utilize the ancient 650MHz PA-RISC 8700 chipset.

These bundles are new, not even refurb, but have a great pricepoint. The catch is, how it comes is how it comes. Period. There are a couple of flavors in each size of box, and that's it. Once it is on-site, of course, you can add cards or whatever.

The RP2405 1-way is the smallest/cheapest. They go up to an RP7405 8-way with 32GB of RAM.

They are certainly not down with used or with Ebay pricing, but for full HP support, etc, if you need it, they aren't bad.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

I would probably go to something like "eBay" or a company the sells used systems and get two or three B180's or C110's and set them up.
As long as they are doing nothing else and your network isn't huge, They should do just fine.
You could easily set two of them up for the price of one rp2430.
I have personally found them to be very reliable.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

I agree with those recommending some really cheap used workstation-type boxes. Skip expensive disk mirroring ... it's cheaper (and simpler) to set up another used workstation.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

The caveat I didn't mention was that it has to be rack mountable.

I think they are going to go with Sun V100 servers.

Re: Cheapest PA/RISC server?

The Sun V100 systems are good. We have more than a dozen here, all acting as DNS servers. You really can't go wrong either way.
I really like the HP 2430 though. Its small and cute, and actually has a lot of horsepower for the money. I'm contemplating getting one for my home LAN/Studio, for use as a firewall.
We're using a 2430 our security server. Its all they need to read log files with.
