communication on HP9000 lost

After rebooting, sam does not work, nor can I ping to ip-address nor hostname. Also, I cannot ping from clients. Recently, there were some changes to the host file and the network interface.

Re: communication on HP9000 lost

Hi Vijender,

Its not very clear, what is happening there from your brief question, still i conclude , somebody might have fiddled with the host name , ip address etc.

Keep a copy of /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file, and /etc/hosts file before doing any more changes.

What you can do is boot the machine in single user mode, and from the console(hope, console is working) assign the proper host name, ip address and additional network paramemters using the commands
#set_parms hostname
it will ask you for the hostname - follow the instructions..
#set_parms ip_address
it will ask you for the ip address- follow the instructions..
#set_parms addl_netwrk
it will ask you for additional network parameters like default gateway etc.

Then you may need to reboot the server, and machine will start working properly, In case no other network issues are there in your setup

Re: communication on HP9000 lost

Hi,

You don't need to be in single-user mode to
run the 'set_parms' suite of scripts. You
can run the command and it will set all of
the required network related parameters.

# /sbin/set_parms initial

Once you have recovered these, you can recover
your 'real hosts' file and any other files
from your backup if you have one.

Re: communication on HP9000 lost

You can do the set_parms at any point. But you need to figure out what you can do.
Start checking your system and files.
Do you have /etc/hosts? Repair as needed
Do you have /etc/rc.config.d/netconf? Repair as needed
Do you have other files...like /etc/services, /etc/inetd.conf, /etc/passwrd, ~nsswitch.conf...etc.?
Just go for the basics here -
SAM isn't working, BUT what about your backup software? Can you restore any of these things from a backup if you need to?

Once you feel these files are back and 'solid' then try a nslookup on your hostname and ip#...make sure it works, then start checking other things and make sure your networking to everything ok.
Last give SAM a try - the issue with SAM may be anything, but that could be treated on seperate post.

Just a thought,
Rita

Re: communication on HP9000 lost

Make sure your server is the first entry in /etc/hosts

Any error messages?
Usually they'll point you to the fix.

It works for me (tm)

Sorry in the delay in responding to your answers. Had to fix too many systems failures in a very short time. Thanks for your help. I got the system back on control.
