Core I/O Internal Modem?

I have a K460 with an internal modem on the core I/O. There is a dongle with a phone jack on it.

I cannot find docs on how to set up the modem. I don't see it in SAM.

Our old sysadmin used the modem for dialin for remote admin. That is all I want to set it up for.

I see reference to the internal modem with Predictive Support. Can anyone explain what Predictive Support is? I assume your box calls HP or HP dials into your box if you have a support contract.

Thanks

Tim

Try doing a CTRL-B to get to the CM> prompt. Type HE for a menu but I believe on the K460s you do a CM> CA to configure the modem and choose internal. Then CM> ER will enable it and you can set a password. Finally, CM> UR will unlock it. Type CM> CO to get the console back when you are done configuring it.

Re: Core I/O Internal Modem?

In another thread (http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,1150,0x165e87dc4d7dd5118ff00090279cd0f9,00.html) I was reminded that it's a really good idea to replace the internal modem with an external.

In a K class, this modem is on port 7 of the Core MUX, /dev/ttyd0p7. Within SAM, you should be to create/setup this modem for dialin.

Predictive Support is the runtime hw monitor which can be installed from the Support Plus CD. The modem will be setup during configuration through psconfig. When a significant hw event is detected, Predictive can either dialout or send email to HP support.

Re: Core I/O Internal Modem?

Hi Tim,

The 'K' class internal modems were never designed
for ingoing and outgoing. They were designed for
the use of the predictive only. That is not to
say that they can't be configured.

The modem can be set up using SAM if you wish. You
must have the cable from the modem plugged into
the system so you can configure it. Here is a link
on how to set up modems in general should you
choose to attach an external one which is not a
bad idea, considering if something goes wrong
with the internal modem you cannot reset it. You
must reboot your system.

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90698/00/00/27-con.html

See man page 'psconfig' for the setting up
predictive. Your system dials HP with hardware
problems, so that HP end up calling you and letting
you know of a problem that has occurred. I have not
seen this work well for tape drives. I would suggest
you install 'EMS' which is part of the ONLINE
diagnostics. It is easy to set and just mail to
yourself or to 'root'

Good Luck

Re: Core I/O Internal Modem?

Please don't use the internal modem. You cannot reset it other than rebooting your box. !!!!!!!!!

I had to do this twice and from that on I changed to an external modem .

Re: Core I/O Internal Modem?

Hi there.
Do yourself a favour. Take some chewing gum and stick it into that modem connector port.
It looks like a nice feature, but it is nasty to handle. Buy a decent MULTITECH modem ( officially supported by HP ) or a US Robotics,
that you can setup with documentation from HP, if you search the techlibrary with the search word modem.

Re: Core I/O Internal Modem?

I am going to go the external route. What model Multitech should I look for? Are there any special cables issues?
