Hi,

here is a entry_level question. What is Core I/O? Could you give me a precise definition for it? Thanks.

Simply put, a Core I/O card is the card that contains all the essential Core Input/Output functionality of any system. This normally comprsies things like the first networking port, the console, the boot disc connection etc.
Basically, enough I/O to install connect and run a system without a need to add any further I/O cards.

On the CORE I/O card, there're various components involved in a system installation such as console port, MDP port, built-in lan, parallel port, Fast-wide or single-ended SCSI depending on the systems.

Core IO card is the one responsible for giving you console connectivity.

That's typically all that makes it important.

If on a k, your core io card may have scsi lan and so on, the fact that it has your console makes it your core io.

Ref the superdome, the core io card has just console connectivity and lan0
