Error Reading IPL

Error Reading IPL

I've got an old HP9000 server I'm trying to rebuild to HP-UX 11.11 for test purposes. I've got sufficient boot disks in it and it does in fact boot to HP-UX 10.20 which was already loaded without any issues. However, when I interrupt the boot and ask to boot from the CD, it comes back with "Warn C7F0" then "Error Reading IPL".

Any ideas anyone please?

Re: Error Reading IPL

The server cannot read from the disc.

Could be a bad media or a firmware problem.

What system model do you have?

Hope this helps!

Re: Error Reading IPL

It's an old D-class server - its brother is installing the 11.11 media perfectly. I've checked that things are terminated as they should be, no problems there that I can detect.

Re: Error Reading IPL

Have you tried booting the server off of its internal disks? That could pinpoint the root cause of the problem. IMHO the target system (server) not the source (CDROM) could be the problem. I remember seeing this error on one of my servers when booting off of its primary hard disk. Interuppted boot and switched to the alternate and things were fine.

Re: Error Reading IPL

Try some different CDs and/or make sure you are pointed at the CDROM. On my D box it is
8/16/5.2.0

Re: Error Reading IPL

Is it the same CDrom drive in both systems ?
Only certain brands/models of CDrom drives are capable of booting HP-UX installation CD's.
It has something to do with the block size of the bootable part of the HP-UX CDrom.

Re: Error Reading IPL

Hi,

The warning you encountered is a "EXT IO"

WRN C7F0 "EXT IO" "error occurred reading other IPL"

You must try to remove other unused SCSI or Fiber card before installing the OS.

Re: Error Reading IPL

Are you sure to boot from the CD and not from an empty disk?

Hope this helps!
