I doubt it's as simple as plugging in a generic null modem cable. The following link shows the pin out for "Simple serial devices":

A PC is not an acceptable console device when hooked to the Core IO Card. It will work *most* of the time, but not *all* the time.
Please search this forum. There have been a number of discussions on this topic.
Used dumb terminals are awful cheap, I suggest you get from from a 3rd party refurbisher.

I am using WRQ Reflection for HP that has a HP terminal emulator. It emulates the console perfectly, including soft keys to emulate the function keys on an HP console.
