HP 9000 K series console via PC. Null modem or straight through?

To use a PC as a console for this server model, do I need to use a null modem cable or a straight through cable? I can't see to find the right answer on this.

Thanks

Hi Kevin,

I doubt it's as simple as plugging in a generic null modem cable. The following link shows the pin out for "Simple serial devices":

Maybe it will help.

The Serial port on a Series 800 HP Servers which also includes the K Class are DCE. Most PCs are DTE, therefore what you may require is a straight through cable.

Don't do it.

A PC is not an acceptable console device when hooked to the Core IO Card. It will work *most* of the time, but not *all* the time.

Please search this forum. There have been a number of discussions on this topic.

Used dumb terminals are awful cheap, I suggest you get from from a 3rd party refurbisher.

Why not use a web-console? Its about $650-700 us dollars, needs a network connection, and then you can access the console via a web browser. You can screen capture, and print. It's a lot better than dedicating a pc serial port to a server.

I use my laptop as a console. I am using a null modem cable to connect the console port to my Laptop's serial port. Both are DTEs.

If you try to use Hyperterminal with a console cable you may have problems.

I am using WRQ Reflection for HP that has a HP terminal emulator. It emulates the console perfectly, including soft keys to emulate the function keys on an HP console.
