I have K class system that I recently upgraded from HPUX 10.10 to 10.20 (I can not go beyond 10.20 due to special software issues). The system had been shutdown for the last two years and I replace an internal battery and a battery card in the disk array. Everything else seems to be operating just fine. However, now the system is stopping in the middle of the night. It only happened a couple of times in the last month but it hung this past Sunday night and again last night between 23:45 (completion of my nightly backup) and 6:00 AM (when the first user attempted to logged in). The system hangs in such a manner that the console looks the same as when I left it the night before but hitting the enter key doesn’t do anything. I end up turning the system key off and back on to reboot. I’ll admit that my Unix is not that great so I don’t know what log files to look at or any other hardware component that could be failing. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

first of all you should have up to date firmware and software.

The current firmware for K220 can be downloaded as patch PF_CKHK0029 from ITRC.

If the problem will still exist, then is the probability, that is the hardware problem.

To determine the actual cause, you would want to TOC the box and capture the dump. The stack trace can be reviewed to determine the cause of the hang.

Is the machine still under support with HP?

The has not been on HP support since it was shutdown a couple of years ago.

I am sure that a trace would provide the answers but I am not sure how to set it up and then diagnose the output. Is there a document that can help me?

Have a look at /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log to see if there are any clues to what's going on between those times.
