HVD controller in N class server

Hi all,

Clay once mention N class should have HVD controller installed additionally.

are there any command so I can see whether we have HVD controller in our N class server, or I have to go to the machine to check?

I inherited this machine and do not have any documents.

Thanks Jane

Re: HVD controller in N class server

The two I know are:
A4800A (single HVD Differential SCSI)
A5159A (dual HVD Differential SCSI)

See example here:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&model=N4000&HP_model=&modname=9000+Server+-+N4000&template=main&plist_sval=Interface+%28Product%29&plist_styp=subcat&dealer_id=&callingsite=&strsrch=&keysel=Interface+%28Product%29&catsel=%3F

I don't remember seeing a command that shows these particular cards specifically.
Anyone for a Mutiny ?

Re: HVD controller in N class server

Hi Jane,
If you have access to the rear of your server you could do worse than to look. You have pci slots on both sides at the top of the server and for some strange reason, the A4800A always seems to have a label to that effect, so you would be able to see if you had one. You coud do an ioscan which would tell you that you have a controller installed but not necessarily which one

Re: HVD controller in N class server

Hi Jane,

look at the rear of the serwer.
If you have PCI card labeled A4800A or A5159A, you have HVD SCSI.

Re: HVD controller in N class server

Hi Jane,

you should see it with:

ioscan -fnkC ext_bus

A sample ioscan from our L-Class with both LVD and one 2 port HVD SCSI interface installed looks like follows:

# ioscan -fnkC ext_bus
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=================================================================
ext_bus 0 0/0/1/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra Wide Single-Ended
ext_bus 1 0/0/1/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra Wide Single-Ended
ext_bus 2 0/0/2/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C87x Ultra Wide Single-Ended
ext_bus 3 0/0/2/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C87x Fast Wide Single-Ended
ext_bus 4 0/8/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra2 Wide LVD
ext_bus 5 0/8/0/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra2 Wide LVD
ext_bus 6 0/10/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra2 Wide LVD
ext_bus 7 0/10/0/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C896 Ultra2 Wide LVD
ext_bus 8 0/12/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C87x Ultra Wide Differential
ext_bus 9 0/12/0/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C87x Fast Wide Differential

The las tword of the "Description" gives you the Interface type:

"LVD" or "Single-Ended" is an LVD Interface (LVD interfaces support both transfer modes)

"Differential" is HVD.

Best regards

Re: HVD controller in N class server

Hi,

I went to the server and did not find the part.

Here is the ioscan result.

# ioscan -fnkC ext_bus
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=================================================================
ext_bus 0 0/0/1/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Fast Wide LVD SCSI
ext_bus 1 0/0/2/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI
ext_bus 2 0/0/2/1 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI
ext_bus 3 0/5/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI
ext_bus 5 1/10/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI
ext_bus 4 1/12/0/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI
#

I guess we do not have HVD controller, the machine has been working for 5 years. Do I need to install it?

Not unless you have a HVD device to connect it to.....

Re: HVD controller in N class server

If you do not know if you need a HVD controller then I think you do not need one ;-)
The HVD Controller is only needed for older Diskenclosures / Diskarrays. If your equipment works with the current config, you do not need to modify it.
