INIT 10 / 11FC error

Got a strange little problem....

We've been requested to move a processor from a 4xPA8000 K460 to a 2xPA8000 K360. We ran this by our local guru, and he thought it would work.

However, when we transferred the processor to the K360, disaster (well, not disaster, but annoyance) struck.

The server will not boot. It hung (>15 minutes) on INIT 10FC. Shut down, reseated processor, and boot hung on INIT 11FC. Tried once more, and hung on INIT 10FC again. The processor was removed, and boot succeeded as normal.

The only difference I can find is that the "new" (from the K460) processor shows up in cstm as PA8000 Revision 2.5, while the K360 procs show PA8000 Revision 3.1. 10/11FC show up as "Synchronizing CPU" errors in the K-class error codes, but why would it fail on Proc 0, then Proc 1, then 0 again? Must there be an even # of processors in a K360? I've been assured that it was installed in the proper (2) slot, and not 3 (0,1,2,3).

Both HP-UX 11.00, not sure of the patch level (Built Oct 2002, and the swinstall depot had whatever was current at the time).

And what exactly is a "Synchronizing CPU" error? Syncing with what?

Try inserting this K460 CPU only (to slot 0) and see what it will tell

No.
If you removed processors 0 or 1 with the power cord plugged in, then you will have to unplug, remove all processors, and pull the power monitor board. Reseat the PMB and then the processors in 0,1,2 order. I had a similar problem that was fixed by this menthod. The PMB monitors the order in which processors are installed, and can cause problems if they are seated in the wrong order.
Hope this helps

Re: INIT 10 / 11FC error

Joshua,
if removing components with power cord attached then after this motherboard, power monitor or processor may appear to be bad.
Remember: with power cord in there's a 'stand-by' power applied. If you wish to remove anything outside or install something into the box, then disconnect power cord and wait until LCD display get blank - remaining power will be drawn form power supply capacitors and only then service hardware

Re: INIT 10 / 11FC error

Beautiful, just beautiful.

To install proc 2/3, the power supply must be removed. None of us knew that the Power Monitor Board had to be pulled as well.

We just tried this on a test box -
shutdown
remove power supply/cord
install additional proc
------- INIT 10FC on boot -------

Then....
shutdown
remove power supply/cord
remove existing procs (keeping them in order - you never know)
remove PMB
let it sit for 10 min.

replace PMB
insert procs in order (0,1,2,3)
replace power supply
power on
------- and up it came -------

Many thanks, this was not exactly intuitive.....
