Memory extenders in rp5470

Hello.

I have an l2000 that will have 16gb of memory in it. It will be upgraded to an rp5470 shortly. According to the hardware guide it says to buy one memory extender per 4 simms (not pairs).

Can anyone confirm that I will indeed need 3 extenders for this to accomodate all 16 simms, or will I only need one extender?

TIA,

Sean

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

You would only need 1 extender (the max number of extender on an rp5470-L3000 is 2). When you upgrade (if I'm not mistaken), the new system board already comes with 1 extender (each extender has 8 slots), so you need to order another extender for the remaining 8 memory sticks. I'm not sure where you got the info about 4 simms on one extender. I think you might have got mixed up.

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

Hello,

First of all, the L3000 (rp5470) takes 2 extenders, not 3.

Second, it takes 8 slots per extender, not 4. Those are DIMMs, not SIMMs by the way.

So, the answer is it depends. If you have 16Gb on 512 memory modules (256x2), then you'll need both extenders. If you have 1Gb memory modules (512x2), then 1 extender is enough.

You have to know that the L3000 takes 8 slots per extender. Basically, it takes the same max amount of slots as the L2000 (16) if both extenders are used.

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

Hello,

I guess I got my math wrong (yet again! :-) ). 99% you have 2*1Gb memory modules, for a total of 8 2Gb memory modules (16*1Gb DIMMs). If you have that, that DEFINATELY you need 2 extenders. I don't know whether 4Gb (2x2Gb) memory modules exist. If you have those, then 1 memory extender would be enough.

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

Ok, lets start over.

I have 16 1GB DIMMS. The parts manual states "1 memory extender for every 4 SIMMS". Note SIMMS, not DIMMS, is from the manual for a RP5470.

So do I need only one additional extender making a total of 2, each with 8 slots?

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

From my upgrade doc notes that I saved up some time in Mar 02.
****
Memory modules are available in 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB and 2048MB capacities. RP5400(L1000) and RP5450(L2000) require server firmware version 40.14 or later to support the 2048MB memory module(2x1GB DIMM). The RP5470(L3000) will support the same memory modules as the RP5400(L1000) and RP5450(L2000). The RP5470(L3000) will support the 2048MB memory module.

The RP5400(L1000)/RP5450(L2000),memory is installed in pairs (modules) directly onto the system board. The RP5470(L3000) will support up to 2 memory carriers, 8 slots each.

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

Just to clarify from the HP 9000 Ordering Guide:

Memory Modules (Min 1 -- Max 8)
256 MB high-density SyncDRAM memory module (uses 2 SIMM slots) [ ] A5554A

512 MB high-density SyncDRAM memory module (uses 2 SIMM slots) [ ] A5797A

1024 MB high-density SyncDRAM memory module (uses 2 SIMM slots) [ ] A5798A

2048 MB high-density SyncDRAM memory module (uses 2 SIMM slots) [ ] A6115A

Memory Carrier Board (Min 1 -- Max 2) [ ]
Memory Extender (1 required for every 4 Memory Modules) [ ] A6155A

Therefore:

1 x Memory Carrier Board per 8 SIMMS.
2 x Memory Carrier Board per 16 SIMMS.

If you have 16 x 1 GB DIMMS they will NOT fit into an rp5470 with 2 x MCB!

See the following from the HP 9000 Config Guide:

Memory Configuration
The HP Server rp5470 supports SyncDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) DIMMs with full ECC protection. The HP Server rp5470 supports up to two memory carrier boards each providing 8 memory slots for a system total of 16 slots.

Memory Loading Rules
G??Memory must be installed in pairs of equal density
G??Memory is available in modules of various densities 256 (2+?128 MB), 512 MB (2+?256 MB), 1 GB (2+?512 MB),or 2 GB (2+?1024 MB)
G??Minimum memory is 256 MB
G??Maximum memory is 16 GB, using 2-GB modules and 2 memory carrier boards
G??Memory chip spare is supported with the 512-MB, 1-GB and 2-GB memory modules
G??Memory chip spare is not supported with the 256-MB memory module

TO HAVE 16GB MEMORY YOU REQUIRE 8 x 2GB Modules. Each module being 2 x SIMM SLOTS...

IT APPEARS YOU HAVE 16GB MEMORY 16 x 1GB Modules. Each module being 2 x SIMM Slots

Re: Memory extenders in rp5470

Again to confirm:

1 x memory extender per 4 memory modules

1 x module = 2 SIMMS.

Therefore 8 SIMMS per extender!

MAX IN SERVER 16 SIMMS
If you don't ask you don't get!
