Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Hi, folks -

I'm looking at V2200's power switch. Not the key switch, but the nasty black circuit-breaker looking beast near the floor on the other (right-hand, as viewed from the front) side. Has anyone ever accidentally tripped this beast? Is it indeed a circuit breaker or just a power switch?

More importantly, does HP (or anyone else) maufacture a cover for said beast? A cover that still allows you to remove/replace the side panel back on the machine? I'd like to be able to visually inspect the cards and connections without worrying about tripping this switch!

Thanks in advance.

It is a circuit breaker and will remove AC from your box quite quickly if tripped. I have worked with several V class and have never heard of the breaker being accidentally tripped. I also have never seen any with a cover either. The switch does require a little bit of force to throw too, if that offers any bit of comfort.

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

NO they don't make one.
But I wish they did for the keyswitch.
I've had several keys snapped off by id10ts either walking too close or moving equip around that bumped into it. It's a PITA to dig out the stub with needle-nose or worse - find 'em so I can turn it on/off.
The problem would be solved IF you could just take the key out whilst it was on....BUT NOOOOO we can't have that.....

And Robert's correct, it takes a lot of force to throw that switch. I doubt that you could "accidently" do it.

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Daniel,
I know one CE who did accidentally flip that switch (yes, it's just a switch, no circuit breaker) After that experience covered the customer the switches of all of their V-Classes. They put just a sheet metal U over the switch

Jeff,
Can you please explain why you can't take the key out of the switch when the system is up. Is it a company policy?

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Hi Patrick,

No it's not a company policy thing, especially after the first was broken.
It's the lock itself - you *can't* remove the key in the ON position - only at the DC OFF position can the key be physically removed.
Now these are 2500s & 2600s I'm referring to, but I think the same applies to the 2200 series.

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

I'm looking at a v2200 with no key in the slot. It responds to ping, and I can log in.

I even looked in the slot to assure there was no broken key. I guess this does not apply to the 2200.

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Daniel,

Well, that's certainly interesting, specially considering that you can upgrade a 2250 to a 2500 or 2600. I've only worked w/25-2600s & none I've had could you remove the key in the ON position.

Patrick - could you check on this. Are keys removable on 2200 series out of the factory, but not on 2500s or 2600s?

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Jeff,
All V-Class server use the same chassis and exactly the same panel that includes the key-switch, TOC-Button, LCD??? no matter if it's a V22x0 or V2500/V2600
The switch has 4 positions not just off and on. You are not able to remove the key in the first on position. Turn it to the end position to remove the key

Re: Power Switch Cover for a V2200?

Patrick,

Thanks, I've learned something today. Was totally unaware of this as the other positions are unlabeled. Wish I'd known that a while back as the data ctr where I had 4 V2500s was, hmmm let's say *crowded*...which certainly contributed to the key problem.
Fortunately the rooms in which the 2600s I work with now are quite spacious & it's not an issue now.
But I have to say that stacking Vs is certainly a test of a raised floor's strength & watching the CEs do it is quite interesting as they weigh a 1/2 ton apiece - it's quite a dance they do with that lift......

Thanks,
Jeff
