web console

Hi,

I've been handed to task of connecting some of our old HP1000 consoles to 'the net' normally they're insolated from the real world. But now we wan't to monitor them via a telnet session of something like that. So amond other things i've tried to connect a webconsole. It's nearly works. I can get a prompt at the system (which runs 0's/7 bit) - but as soon as i eg. list files it hangs. Most likely its the EnqAck setting that i'm missing, so my web console is never acknowleding that it's receiving data. Have anyone tried something simular? Can this be done? It's not likely that we're going to put our HP1000 computers to sleep anytime soon!

Regards,
Kaare

Re: web console

I had a similer problem on my N-Class boxes using web console. Turned out to be two fold; 1. The N-class (maybe L also) does not support the HP terminal protocol, only VT100.
2. The Web console is Java based. Download the most current Java machine from Sun for Windows.

After updating Java most problems went away.

Re: web console

I don't think that the web console supports enq/ack can't you reconfigure the 1000 I/O to run XON/XOFF ?

If you have an old DTC yo could try running it backwards ? you can assign a different port number to each serial port, switch telnet off and connect the serial port to the HP1000 and then telnet in telnet hp_dtc 10001 or whatever port number you assigned.

- this method has worked well for me in the past allowing me to connect to 3000's etc.

Re: web console

Hi,

I'm not actually sure wheter or not i can reconfigure the ports to xon/xoff, i'll have to ask one of the gurus. When you say DTC what do you actually mean? (Yet another acronym that i can't translate)

Re: web console

Data Terminal Server.. used for supplying user sessions to serial terminals over LAN. Mostly used in MPE environments but also in HPUX. Not widely used anymore as every man and his dog has a PC on his desk connected to the LAN with a terminal emulator installed.

It is possible to use a DTC, in conjunction with Open View DTC Manager, to assign an ip address to a port on the DTC, which can then be attached to a console port. Then you can telnet to the console from anywhere on the same LAN, obviously being serial you can only have 1 session to the console at a time.
