why the n4000 boot so slowly?

Hi, exports,
We have two n4000 with va7400, ds2400, one swith,28*36G disks, 7 cpu each, 14G mem each
the system boot time about more than 20 minutes, it show that 'configure fibric channel' take more than 5 mins. is this ok?
Sometime we have to reboot the system, an now , we are afraid of rebooting the box.
why the boot time is so long ? are there any method to resolve it? why hp box boot so slowly , the alpha box boot much fast.

Can any one give me some advices?

Thanks a lot
Sunny

Get used to it.

All HP boxes boot slowly. You can SOMEWHAT speed up the boot process by turning FASTBOOT on, but that by-passes memory checks during reboot, which is not a good thing to do.

Other than there is nothing you can do to speed up the boot process. That's just the way it is.

Hi,

Depending on how much hardware is in your system will determine how long a reboot takes. If you are doing some heavy maintenance then by all means set the system to FASTBOOT whilst your doing it.

Systems should not require rebooting too often so I would not worry to much about it. In fact the checking of the hardware is to your benefit.

Seeing you have FC this will also take some time depending on how many FC cards you have and how much hardware it has to find.

Hi,

To give some comparison I have a N4000 with 8Gb RAM, 6 CPU's going to a brocade switch to an EMC clariion SAN. This particular gets system gets booted every Saturday evening and takes around 35 minutes.

Re: why the n4000 boot so slowly?

Hello,

When machines boot, all hardware is tested for errors or faults. So, if you have a lot of memory/CPU and fibre channel etc., then it's going to take a long time.

A simple E-Class is slow but boots very fast since it does not have a lot of hardware to test.

Re: why the n4000 boot so slowly?

It's better than the old ibm system 38's which took up to two hours to boot. The system is performing hardware checks on memory, io cards, cpu, battery, etc.. and the more you got in the box the longer it takes to check it. Now you can disable memory checking, but that's like playing russian roulette with a loaded automatic -> you're going to lose.

Plus, when you start adding applications, like oracle into the mix, you can tag on a few more ten's of minutes.

Next time, go get a cup of coffee/tea and grab a newspaper/magazine.

As we complained about the spped of reboot.
hp enginner install pathch, and it seem speed up the reboot, and the time is reduced to 10min
