2530-48G doesn't recognise SFP+ direct attach cable
Hi,
Just started configuring some new 2530-48G (J9281B) switches and ran into the following problem.
Together with the switches we ordered a few SFP+ direct attach cables (J9775A) as they were listed as an accessory.
When the interfaces refused to come up, I looked at the logs and saw the following entries:
W 01/01/90 00:00:19 00536 FFI: port 49 Transceiver type not supported in this
port.
W 01/01/90 00:00:19 00536 FFI: port 50 Transceiver type not supported in this
port.
As expected the following command doesn't return anything:
switch1# show tech transceivers
transceivers
Transceiver Technical Information:
Port # | Type | Prod # | Serial # | Part #
-------+-----------+------------+------------------+----------
=== The command has completed successfully. ===
How come these cables don't work, when HP lists these as compatible on the product page of the switch?
The cable is listed on the following page, under the tab services and options.
http://www8.hp.com/be/nl/products/networking-switches/product-detail.html?oid=5333809#!tab=oas
I haven't upgraded the firmware yet, as it should work regardless of version.
switch1# show version

Anyone got an idea?

Re: 2530-48G doesn't recognise SFP+ direct attach cable
In the meantime I've upgrade the firmware to the latest one to see if it makes a difference.
switch1# show version

orlando)

As a result, the sfp cable still doesn't work, but now I get more info from the show tech transceivers command:
switch1# show tech transceivers
transceivers
Transceiver Technical Information:
Port # | Type | Prod # | Serial # | Part #
-------+-----------+------------+------------------+----------
49 | ?? | ?? | unsupported | 8121-1300
50 | ?? | ?? | unsupported | 8121-1300
The following transceivers have extra information:
Port # Message
-------- -------------------------------------
Port 49 Transceiver type not supported in this port.
Port 50 Transceiver type not supported in this port.
=== The command has completed successfully. ===
All suggestions are welcome.

Re: 2530-48G doesn't recognise SFP+ direct attach cable
The switch you have doesn't support 10Gig and the DAC is only 10Gig. There are 4 versions of the 2530 that do support 10Gig and that DAC:
HP 2530-48G-PoE+-2SFP+ Switch (J9853A)
HP 2530-48G-2SFP+ Switch (J9855A)
HP 2530-24G-PoE+-2SFP+ Switch (J9854A)
HP 2530-24G-2SFP+ Switch (J9856A)
SFP = 1Gig
SFP+ = 10Gig
To use the 4 SFP ports on your switch, you need a transceiver. There is one that will give you another RJ45 for GigT and then options for fiber cables. So if you want the DAC type functionality, you would need 2 RJ45 transceivers and a Cat5,6,6a, or 7 cable.
X121 1G SFP RJ45 Transceiver (J8177C)
X121 1G SFP LC SX Transceiver (J4858C)
X121 1G SFP LC LX Transceiver (J4858C)
X121 1G SFP LC LH Transceiver (J4858C)
X122 1G SFP LC BX-D Transceiver (J9142B) This is special and only uses one fiber strand
X122 1G SFP LC BX-D Transceiver (J9142B) This is for the other end of the transceiver above
For 100Mb - X111 100M SFP LC FX Transceiver (J9045C)
By the way, there is a really cool tool online that will help configure a switch: http://h17007.www1.hp.com/us/en/networking/products/configurator/index.aspx
Hope this helps.
