2910al-48G PoE-Problem

Hi,

I'm new here, no network-expert and no english native-speaker, so please be patient ;-)

We have a ProCurve 2910al-48G PoE switch since about two years and connected two Abus network cameras (Abus TVIP 11500) with a PoE Flexible Splitter (Digitus DN-95201 PoE splitter). Both cameras worked fine until on of them stopped some months ago. After some probing I diagnozed that the splitter was defect and ordered a new one. When connecting the new splitter and the camera (camera B) to the switch at the same port as before the switch rebooted (all LEDs on / blinking, all connections dropped, ...), which made some users rather angry ... So I stopped this experiments until a free weekend when there was no one working. Connected the splitter and camera B - same behaviour. New splitter also defect? Tried a third one -> same behaviour! Connecting the splitter and camera B to an other port: camera B did not work, no reboot. Connecting the camera B to the splitter of the other camera A -> camera B works. Changing the splitter of camera A to the new splitter -> camera A works.

My conclusion:

- one port of the switch works fine

- at least one port yealds to a reboot of the switch if connecting a PoE-device

- other ports (the ones that are free) don't work at all (although I double-checked that PoE is enabled on these ports)

Anybody any ideas? Defect switch?

Regards

    Martin

Re: 2910al-48G PoE-Problem

Hi Martin,

I'll preface this by saying that i'm no PoE expert.

One thing that might cause that behaviour is pulling too much power. If plugging in the 2nd camera causes the issue, try disconnecting the 1st camera and plugging in just the 2nd camera to the port you think is bad. If it still reboots, i think you might have a faulty switch.

If it works, i would be checking the specifications of the splitters and switch and making sure the switch has enough capacity to drive them. It might be that your cameras are expecting PoE+ and the switch might be providing only PoE.

Re: 2910al-48G PoE-Problem

Hi Paul,

thanks for your advice, although the connected splitter is a "Digitus PoE Flexible splitter" (DN-95201 VPR 1-0) which draws from 1A (12 V) to 1.5A (5V) of current with selectable input voltage of 40V-57V or 18V-55V.

Because the switch is our central switch I cannot test this during working hours so I have to find a free sunday to do this.
