4108GL Unmanageable

Hi,

We have a 4108gl at the core of our network (secondary school) and recently I noticed it become inaccesible via the web interface.

I checked out SNMP monitoring programme and the switch was showing fine and reporting port usage etc fine, it was also operating fine.

I decided to wait until the holidays to reboot it. That now done, I still cannot access the web management. I wireshark'ed it and it just looks like the switch is throwing a RST packet straight back like it doesn't want to know. I've tried SSH and telnet using Putty and get connection closed/refused. I don't know whether they were set up but still.

Failing that, I have plugged a serial cable in the console port and still get nothing. Have tried with and without hardware control, tried 9600bps and 57600bps. It just sits on a blinking cursor. Have hit enter several times to try and get it's attention, have also re-restarted the switch, no change. I didn't see anything on the COM port when it was botting, I read somewhere it should show the POST screen etc? Not sure, but I didn't get anything. Tried with HyperTerminal too.

I'm a bit lost beyond managing it via the web interface, so any help would be very welcome.

Kind regards,

Sam.

With the console connection, make sure you are using "none" for flow control.

Re: 4108GL Unmanageable

Hi Vince,

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, I didn't write very clearly in my original post but I have tried the serial (console) connection with "none" set for flow control. I also read an eHow guide that said flow control should be set to Xon/Xoff, so I tried that as well (in some desperation!). I have also restarted and tried again, still no luck.

Any more suggestions? Thanks in advance,

Sam.

Re: 4108GL Unmanageable

Maybe somebody did log into the switch and changed the password.

That would be the only answer I know if the Switch is not damaged.

In this case you have to reset the switch to factory default and setup against.

At this moment you maybe should use a better password...

Re: 4108GL Unmanageable

Hi,

Well as I was suspecting, this is down to a stupid mistake on my part. The console connection problem was down to me using a "standard" serial cable rather than a null modem one and the original problem was due to the list of manager IPs being wrong. I don't remember changing that list but evidently I did, at least I now know that works! :/

Anyway, thank you everyone who bothered to read this and provide constructive advice. So glad I didn't have to reset the switch!

Kind regards,

Sam.
