ARP age effecting server redundancy
I have two Linux servers providing the same service via a virtual IP managed by Heartbeat. My layer-3 switch is a 5406R. The default 20 minute arp age setting makes failover almost worthless. Shortening it to 1 minute solves that problem but it reminds me of the old joke about using a brick to kill a fly on the window. Is there a way to keep the arp age at 20 minutes but instruct the switch that if an arp enrty becomes invalid inside that window to purge it immediately?
